Rnd 2: Sabres Women too strong for Lions

By Jake Stoubos

Sturt Sabres 111 | Central Districts Lions 51

The Sturt Sabres have continued their impressive start to the season with a massive win over the Central Districts Lions last Friday at home.

From the opening tip, Sturt immediately took control of the game dominating the play through fast breaks, several steals and capitalising on scoring opportunities. Centrals still had numerous chances to score but couldn’t seem to do so and gave up the lead in first by 21 points.

Gameplay slowed down a little in the second but Sturt still managed to make successful use of their free throws and took the lead to 51-22 at halftime.

The Sabres remained strong in the third, while Centrals gave up a lot of fouls allowing for some easy buckets. Ann Hatchard had a solid quarter racking up several rebounds and finished the game with 17 points, 12 rebounds in total.

Despite being down nearly 50 points, the Lions didn’t give up in the fourth as they had their best quarter by keeping the gameplay relatively tight. In the end, Sturt’s pure dominance and pressure from was just too much for the Lions to handle though with the team taking home a 51 point loss - a tough Round 2 pill to swallow for the visitors.

Hannah Richards was the top scorer for the night with 18 points, while Danni Angley with a double-double (14 points, 11 assists) proved her worth as a team player. Jade Johnson (15 points, 3 rebounds) and Kate Gladstone (16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists) also filled the stat sheet with double-digit scoring.

Alisha Carlin (15 points, 5 rebounds) played well for Centrals and while Charlotte Taylor scored 13 points off the bench, she also contributed 7 of the team’s 25 turnovers sending the Lions home with a 0-2 run and plenty to improve on.
