Rnd 3: Warriors Women make a statement on the road

By Kieren Vartuli

Woodville Warriors 80 | Central Districts Lions 40

Centrals hosted the Warriors in their home opener Saturday night and were looking to get their first win of the season. After coming off a win before the break, Scott Herriman’s Warriors were looking to get two wins on the trot.

The Warriors drew first blood in the opening term and kept the foot on the gas throughout the first. The game started out sloppy for the Lions, as turnovers were costly on their defensive end. Woodville were not only capitalising on the break but also consistently shooting well from the field. Despite excellent ball movement from both sides, the Warriors were able to shoot away with a strong 18-point lead going into the first break.

Coming out of the first break, Woodville were playing strong defence and easily penetrating into the paint on their offensive end. Although as the quarter continued Centrals did find their footing and started to play much better defence. Despite this, Woodville were dominating the game and finished the half with a 29-point lead.

The Lions played with much more aggressiveness in the second half and increased their defensive pressure on not only Woodville’s Tavarsha Scott but the remainder of the team. Despite the increased pressure, Woodville not only moved the ball round excellently but also ran their transition offense effectively keeping Centrals off guard. Centrals were struggling to get it to go from the field and finished the quarter down 45.

Throughout the final term, Centrals were playing well on both ends of the floor. They were still applying great pressure on the defensive end although they were also penetrating the paint to get some nice buckets. The Lions showed some signs of life in the last term as they outscored the Warriors 20-15 although it was too little too late.

The Warriors were having an excellent night from the floor, finishing with a total of 25 made baskets and an impressive 26 made free throws giving them the 40-point victory on the road. Tavarsha Scott finished as Woodville’s top scorer with 19 while Alisha Carlin had a game high 24 points.

BLOCKBUSTER ROUND: Saturday, 9 April at Wayville
