Rnd 4: Woodville Men grab blowout victory over Mavericks

By Mark Halliday

Woodville Warriors 107 | Eastern Mavericks 65

The Woodville Warriors cruised to victory in a 42 point thrashing of the Eastern Mavericks during the Premier League's Blockbuster weekend on Sunday at Pasadena.

There was a stark contrast between the two halves. The first half was close and looked as though the match could have gone either way. Eastern jumped on their opponents early as they built a 9 point gap before Woodville responded with a 16-4 close out of the first. Darren Ng found his rhythm late in the quarter, scoring 10 points in less than two minutes and turning a 4 point deficit into a 3 point Warrior advantage.

Ng wasn't finished though as he opened the second with two triples. He and Adam Miller both connected on jumpers to give Woodville a 7 point lead just three minutes into the quarter.

The Mavericks closed the gap but it was Miller and Nelson Kirksey who steadied for the Warriors as they ended the half 7 points ahead.

Things got better for the Warriors in the second half while it was one to forget for the Mavericks. Woodville outscored Eastern 33-15 in the third quarter and 62-27 for the entire second half.

Woodville shut down the Mavericks offence on route to a 20 points lead with just under six minutes left in the third. Kirksey was the stand out, scoring 12 points in the period as the relentless Warriors pushed the lead to 27 by the end of the quarter.

The Warrior's bench got extended minutes in the fourth and didn't let up in their attack. Eastern were helpless on the other end as they struggled to find open shots and couldn't make the ones that went up.

Ng finished with 22 points to lead all scorers. Kirksey had 21 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists. Miller added 14 points, 6 rebounds in the win.

The Mavericks were led by Haydn Barns with 15 points, Tom Cioffi scored 12 points, 6 rebounds while Mark Hautop and Devon McGee both added 10.
