Rnd 5: Undefeated Tigers Men with another strong showing

By Connor Rice

Southern Tigers 107 | Forestville Eagles 88

The Southern Tigers are running rampant on the league and Saturday night was no different with a strong 19 point win over the Eagles. Once again the Tigers managed to own the defensive and offensive ends of the floor and get whatever looks they wanted. The Tigers really set the tempo of the game from the jump looking to run the ball out quickly and work inside on offense.

A point of difference from previous games was the inclusion of Alex Starling at Power Forward. Not only is Starling a lengthy player but incredibly quick and athletic for his size. Players like Sam Johns and Mitch Creek would make entry passes into Starling down low, which either resulted in an easy inside look or a cut for another player to score. Finishing with 26 points, his size and speed will likely be a key defensive mismatch for the majority of teams in coming weeks.

Three point shooting was a focal point for both teams with many players managing to knock down multiple triples. Todd Davies for the Tigers hit five huge 3’s for 15 points and the combination of Rios (24 points) and Doyle (25 points) for the Eagles meant they could answer back. While the Eagles managed to get some great looks offensively, they couldn’t capitalise and this ultimately hurt them on the scoreboard.

Mitch Creek had another dominant performance with 20 points, 11 rebounds with Starling finishing with 26 points, 14 rebounds. For the first time this season the Tigers ran a front court of Starling and Creek during the game and while they may give up some size, this duo will be incredibly hard to deal with in limited stretches for their sheer speed and scoring ability.

It was another prevailing performance by the Southern Tigers men who are yet to lose and truly stretched by a team. In five games the Tigers now have an average point differential of +31 – an amazing achievement and really a testament to how good their squad is this year.
