Rnd 10: Bearcats Women outrun Rockets late for victory

By Mark Halliday

West Adelaide Bearcats 79 | North Adelaide Rockets 63

The West Adelaide Bearcats have secured a win against a top 4 team after three straight loses by outpacing the North Adelaide Rockets late in the game to give them a 79-63 at Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

After matchups against Forestville, Southern and Norwood all ended in a loss, the Bearcats got themselves back on track with a convincing showing in the second half to run away with the game.

Both teams were trading baskets, the lead and turnovers as holding onto the ball proved to be an issue for both sides throughout the first half.

It wasn't until three and a half minutes left in the third that the Bearcats put together a run to close the quarter that would ultimately give them the momentum to pull out a big lead.

Leading 46-45, West Adelaide finished the third with a 12-5 run for an 8 point edge and then opening the fourth with a 7-0 run that put them up by 15 with 8:18 remaining.

The Rockets were unable to respond as they continued to throw the ball away, something that had plagued them from the start, resulting in an incredible 26 turnovers for the game. Shots weren't falling either as the visitor's only managed 4 points in the first 4 minutes of the fourth as they watched the game slip away from them.

Ashlea Vordermaier (24 points, 9 rebounds) scored 11 in the final quarter to lead her team to victory. Trudy Holland and Teonna Campbell both added 10 points in the win.

North Adelaide had big contributions from Jo Hill (21 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals) and Shannon McKay (25 points) but didn't get anything else from the rest of the team as they dropped their third game of the season.
