Rnd 13: Mavericks Men blown away by top seed Tigers

By Jake Stoubos
Southern Tigers 101 | Eastern Mavericks 48

The Eastern Mavericks have lost by a landslide to the impressive Southern Tigers outfit last Sunday in the Adelaide Hills.

In what ended in a demolition, began fairly even. The Mavericks were first to make their mark on the scoreboard with some early free-throws thanks to Zachary Lovell. The Tigers however were quick to retaliate with a basket of their own mere seconds later. This back and forth playstyle was on repeat for the majority of the first quarter, leading us to believe we would have a fairly even and contested game going forward.

That was not the case at all, as the Tigers completely lifted their game in the second quarter.  Their pressure was elevated to a whole new level, resulting in rapid shots being made in quick succession. Southern were able to easily create rebounds off the Maverick’s inability to score and keep the ball down their end. Mitch Creek created one of what was several slam dunks to come 8 minutes in which fired up his side and thus writing off an ultra-impressive and dominant second quarter by his team. The halftime score was 47-22.

The third quarter was fairly identical to the second. The Maverick’s defence was completely shattered as was their spirit. They were constantly missing shots and letting rebounds and counter attacks happen. This all resulted in the opposition scoring with ease by treating the fans to an abundance of three pointers, slam dunks and layups. Eastern were only able to attain 5 points in the second period and 6 in the third.

To their credit, the Mavericks did play slightly better in the final period, as their accuracy and ball control increased by a touch. However it was all little too late as the Tigers’ sheer dominance throughout the last three quarters was the decisive factor in the end. Their ability to completely shut down the Mavericks defence and move the ball around with such ease was a true marvel to be seen. The final score saw the Tigers win 101-48.

Mitch Creek was the obvious candidate for best on ground as he was simply brilliant to watch and attained a stellar 36 points, 5 steals and 5 assists.

With this notable victory, the Southern Tigers retain their position on top of the ladder for the season.
