Rnd 15: Tigers Men overcome valiant Panthers

By Connor Rice

Southern Tigers 101 | South Adelaide Panthers 64

At polar opposites of the league spectrum, both squads going into Saturday had different things to accomplish. For the Tigers it was important to lock up every winnable game and fight for that minor premiership. For the Panthers it was to remain competitive and use any game as an experience moving forward.

From the outset it was obvious as to how the game was going to play out. For anyone who hasn’t watched the Panthers play, it is evident they lack in personnel and skill more than they make up for in intensity and grit. Neck and neck throughout the first, both squads were very physical as they tried to scratch out some advantage. However, the 1st quarter ended with only a one-point margin. An unfamiliar territory for both squads but one they both embraced heading into the second.

The game remained very close in the second until the Tigers had one of their trademark breakaways. As for anyone who have seen the Tigers play, it seems they can turbocharge their offense off a single play and a huge Alex Starling transition steal and breakaway dunk sent them into over drive. A 10-point lead took them into the third.

The second half then proved too much for the struggling Panthers defense as the Tigers seemingly got production from everywhere and Creek, Starling, Ellison and Johns all poured in the points. Ryan Garderner and Adrien Coleman, two of the Panthers best scorers, held their team strongly but unfortunately it was still too much. The Tigers rampant run was mostly capped off by a huge Starling poster which all but sealed the game for the Tigers.

The fourth ran out as the Tigers controlled until the end and won easily. While the scoreboard reflected a blowout, the real game was anything but especially in that first half. It was a brave effort from the Panthers who gave the Tigers a strong showing but unfortunately they were overmatched by an incredibly dynamic Tigers offense. The Tigers will definitely be looking to maintain their red hot form again next week especially as finals nears.

Round 16: Saturday, 9 July 8:15pm
