Norwood Men Defeat Mavs at Home

Eastern Mavericks (85) lost to Norwood Flames (98)

After losing their first two games by a total of 4 points, the Norwood Flames men’s team have worked their way back into fifth position following a second consecutive win when they defeated the Eastern Mavericks 98-85.

For the Mavericks, their 2013 season trend continued as they failed to win another close chance. In this heated match-up Eastern were able to take the first and last quarters, but their slump in shooting percentage combined with Norwood’s dominance of the boards over quarters 2 and 3 saw them give up too much ground to recover.

The game swung Norwood’s way late in the second stanza as Ian O’Boyle went on a mini streak, scoring 8 points in under two minutes to lift his team to a 7 point advantage at the half. The third term was a blowout Norwood’s way as Eastern top scorer Curtis Scipio; along with Brad Davis and Dylan Shorne, went quiet from the field. Meanwhile Matthew Long, Keith Krause and Matthew Lycett converted at the other end.

Eastern regained their composure in the last period, outscoring Norwood by 12 points. The Flames held on till the final buzzer for their deserved 13 point win. Lycett led the way in scoring for Norwood with 18, just topped by 1 point for game high honours by Eastern’s Scipio, who also led the way with 7 assists while Norwood’s Long had 5 dimes for his team. Krause (Norwood) and Thomas Giles (Eastern) headed their teams for rebounds with 7 and 6 respectively.
