Flames Men Crush Tigers

Southern Tigers (67) lost to Norwood Flames (99)

The men’s clash between Southern and Norwood saw the visiting Flames prevail by 33 points to help them keep third spot on the ladder. Norwood have won the most games away from home in the competition this year, with this victory on Saturday night counting as their fifth away win for the season.

The Tigers got the early break in the game, starting off with a 9-2 run. Samuel Johns had 5 points to his name in the first quarter, however he only went on to add another 4 for the rest of the night. The Flames made their way back in and lead 26-16 at the end of the first.

Both sides tussled in the second, as the Tigers kept themselves within 6 points for majority of the quarter. Matthew Lycett and Keith Krause were influential tall targets for the Flames, as they went into the half time break ahead 40-34.

Expecting a tight contest, the second half turned into a completely different game. Norwood bolstered out of the blocks with an incredible 15-4 run, before some great combined shooting by Lycett, Krause and Webber delivered a mammoth 39-point quarter at 70% (12/17 FGS) for the Flames and put them way out in front, leading by 34 points at the final break.

The Tigers redeemed themselves a little in the final quarter, but the result was only inevitable. The final score read 99-67 in Norwood’s favour, handing the Tigers their fourth loss in a row at home this season.

Michael McGreehan ended up as Southern’s top scorer for the night, sinking 13 points in his 13 minutes on court. Krause, Webber and Lycett all shared 14 points each for the Flames, while Daniel Webber also had 12 points to his name.
