A Win in the Hills For Mavs

Eastern Mavericks (72) defeated Southern Tigers (60)
The Southern Tigers have stayed ahead of the Eastern Mavericks in 8th spot despite their loss to the 9th placed Mavs in the hills on Saturday.

In what was a tight physical tussle the Eastern Mavericks showed heart and hunger from the start. The Tigers made it tough for the home side though trading goals in the first quarter with scores evenly matched at the first break. The second quarter was more of the same with both sides stepping up the tempo and only 1 point difference at half time in favour of the Mavs.

It was Easterns' defensive pressure that opened up the game for them as they shut the visitors out of the key, forcing the visitors to shoot from outside the 3 point line with little result. Easterns' teamwork continued to deliver with 20 assists for the night compared to the Tigers 5.

The Mavericks were up by 6 points at the final break and with the home crowd behind them they hit the court in the final quarter displaying focus and determination. Coach Nathon Jones broke down the final quarter into incremental victories with Amanda MacDermot stepping up to lead her team on court. Her team answered her call, closing out the game one play at a time and finishing the night 12 points in front.

It was the Mavericks first win since round 6. Shannon Tarran and Emma Hooley both made double doubles with 18 points,12 rebounds and 11 points, 12 rebounds respectively. Hooley also made 5 assists.
