Warriors Finals Hopes Survive

Woodville Warriors (90) defeated Southern Tigers (86)

The Woodville Warriors have claimed an important victory to keep themselves in the equation for the finals with a 4 point win over Southern Tigers at St. Clair on Saturday night.

The Warriors, once trailing by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, fought back to within one point on the back of a Carmen Reynolds triple to put the score at 77-78 with 5:48 to play. Woodville would take the lead no more than 30 seconds later when Deanna Troia nailed a three of her own and gave the home side their first lead since the 6:15 mark in the first quarter.

The Tigers evened the score and then took the lead back when Kaylee Biddell and Kelsie Rutland both made shots with two and a half minutes to play. Jessica Von Einem responded for the Warriors with a three to put her team up by one. Troia then made a huge defensive play with 1:33 left to play when she planted herself at mid-court and forced Rutland to be called for charging.

Southern had a number of chances to even the score in the dying seconds but missed shots and made free throws by Reynolds and Troia sealed the win for the Warriors.

Reynolds scored a game-high 22 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, dished out 8 assists and registered 5 steals. Troia added 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Katherine Perkas scored 16 and also had 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Tigers were led by Rutland who scored 20, while both Lauren Fisher (18 points, 12 rebounds) and Hayley Bunce (10 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles.

Woodville are still in the hunt for a finals spot as they share a win loss record with Forestville who are currently in 5th but the Eagles hold the split over the Warriors so they need the stars to align over the next fortnight to ensure a finals appearance.
