Panthers too strong as Mahony nears Triple Double
South Adelaide 85 defeated Forestville 57
Jess Mahony put in one of the performances of the season to lead South Adelaide to a 28 point rout of Forestville in the women’s elimination final at Marion.
In a packed Marion stadium in front of the Panther faithful and without a break for the game, Mahony finished with a stat line of 21 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists, just one assist shy of a rare triple double.
After an even first quarter in which neither team had the ascendency, South pulled away in the second to finish the half with an 8 point lead.
The run continued in the second half – South started the quarter with an 8-0 run prompting a Forestville time out 5 minutes in after they had missed their first seven shots of the half and thrown four turnovers. The timeout stopped the scoring run, but It wasn’t until 2:30 to go in the quarter that Sam Defrancesco score Forestville’s first basket for the quarter, and at ¾ time, the lead was back to 17.
Ieva Nagy converted on three free throws to start the quarter, and while Forestville managed to improve their offensive output, the result was well beyond doubt.
In addition to Mahony’s stellar performance, Janae Howard was dominant, scoring 25 points on 50% shooting, while for Forestville, despite playing just 26 minutes due to foul trouble, Carla Borrego Williams finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
