Round 6 WEDNESDAY Preview: Women

By James Woite

Woodville Warriors (3-2) v North Adelaide Rockets (5-0)

The Woodville Warriors, back at their old stomping ground, will attempt to build on their two game winning streak when they meet the unbeaten North Adelaide Rockets on Wednesday.

After starting the season 1-2, the Warriors earned sizable victories over West and Southern to go above .500 for the first time since Round 1. A late scoring burst from Jo Hill prevented a shock loss for the Rockets against the Bearcats last week, as they came from seven points down in the fourth quarter to steal a win.

Last time they met was in Round 2, with the Rockets running out 71-37 victors. Hill scored 20 points for the Rockets, while Perkas had 11 points for the Warriors.

It would have to be at least a 35 point swing for the Warriors to reverse their previous result against the Rockets, but the scorelines of the last fortnight suggest the Warriors are in with a chance of an upset.

Forestville Eagles (1-4) v South Adelaide Panthers (1-5)

Both the Forestville Eagles and South Adelaide Panthers badly need a win at Adelaide Arena on Wednesday, so as to keep pace with the top five.

After making the finals last season, the Eagles and Panthers are a combined 2-9 to start 2015. The Panthers only managed to get their first win last week, where they defeated the Lions 84-59. The Eagles went down 68-75 to Eastern, extending their losing streak to three games. They were outscored 0-10 in the final four minutes of the game.

The Eagles’ previous and only win to date came against the Panthers in Round 2. Samantha Defrancesco made a key three-pointer with a little over a minute left, and ended the night with 19 points. Hajnal and Ieva Nagy each scored 13 points for the Panthers, who were without star Jessica Mahony.

Mahony has lead her teams to many wins in her career, and with her back in the team, the Panthers should be a lot stronger than the last time they clashed with the Eagles.
