Flames shut down Eagles, cruise to victory.

The Norwood Flames continue their undefeated season as they easily handled the Forestville Eagles, 73-55 at Wayville on Saturday night.

The Flames set themselves up early for the victory with a concentrated defensive effort on Forestville's Carla Borrego and a balanced scoring output on the other end. Norwood set double teams each time Borrego caught the ball in the low post and their quick rotations on defence made it difficult for the Eagles to swing the ball and find an open shot. The Eagles were plagued by turnovers throughout the game, committing 27 for the game as Borrego turned the ball over nine times in 28 minutes of play.

Taylor Ortlepp led the Flames on the offensive end with 17 points as she consistently found gaps in the Forestville defence to drive to the hoop and also doing damage from long range with three triples. Norwood's Kelsey Ireland started the game strong with seven of her 11 points coming in the first quarter to go along with four assists. Jess Good added a double double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Forestville struggled to find the basket, only Borrego registered double digits in scoring with 15 to go along with her seven rebounds and three blocks. Sarah Petrie was the next best with nine points.

In the end it was Norwood's defence that dictated the game. The Flames limited the Eagles to 32 points through the first three quarters while scoring 61 themselves. It was only Forestville's 23-12 fourth quarter advantage that brought the final gap to under 20 points.

MEN

Flames overcome slow start to edge out Eagles.

The Norwood Flames were able to shake off a slow start to come back and beat the Forestville Eagles in a close finish, 85-79, at Wayville on Saturday night.

Forestville had the upper hand early, leading by 10 after one quarter and keeping the visitors at a distance for most of the second. However, Norwood hit back right before half time to take the momentum away from the Eagles. Down 43-33, Matt Lycett and Nick Hambour both connected on shots while Andrew Webber splashed a triple to cut the lead to three points going into the major break.

The Flames' run had caused the Eagles to give up their early advantage as they ran their offence through Anthony Petrie while Daniel Sims made three triples in Forestville's quick start.

Petrie and Adam Doyle led the Eagles out of the half until Lycett put the Flames ahead for the first time with 4:30 left in the third. Forestville immediately regained the lead but a Jacob Holmes' turn around jumper gave Norwood the lead for almost the rest of the game.

While the contest on the floor was a thrilling match, the battle between Petrie and Holmes was enthralling in its own right. The two bigs went at each other as both led their respective teams. Holmes was deadly from mid-range, his turn around jump shot was his go-to move in his 21 point, 15 rebound performance. Petrie was up to the task as he was difficult to stop on the inside and caused problems for the defence. He finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

The Eagles briefly took the lead mid-way through the fourth but it was the Flames who had taken control of the game. A few untimely turnovers and some questionable decisions on offence halted the Eagles as they were forced to start fouling to stay in the game. Forestville was unable to make their shots in the closing seconds as Webber (14 points, five assists) and Lycett (17 points, 10 rebounds) sealed the game at free throw line.
