Sabres book trip to Grand Final with comeback win over Warriors

By Mark Halliday.

The Sturt Sabres are headed to the Grand Final after overcoming a tough Woodville Warriors team, 77-70 in a game that was decided in the last minute of play.

Both teams were locked in a battle during the fourth quarter after the Sabres had erased a 13 point Woodville lead en route to their victory.

Sturt's CJ Reed (18 points, nine rebounds) tied the game up on a pair of free throws halfway through the final quarter and less than a minute later, Jan Warbout was left open for a triple that gave the Sabres their first lead since the second quarter.

The Sabres figured out how to defend the Warriors in their run as they shut down the middle and made it difficult to get close for easy points. Woodville had relied on the inside early in the game to gain the advantage but were unable to hold off Sturt and missing shots weren't helping their cause.

The Warriors responded as Luke Stanbridge (18 points, nine rebounds, two blocks) and Ian Nixson (14 points) gave the home side a small margin with 3:35 left to play.

Sturt's Reed, who was desperate to get his team back into the game when they were down with a number of drives and shots that didn't drop, finally found the net on a three pointer that tied the game once more.

Neither team could break the deadlock until Tim Klaosen (23 points, 15 rebounds) was fouled on a fast break and calmly made both to give Sturt a 72-70 lead. Klaosen found himself at the line again but missed both after the Sabres expertly defended the Warriors. Not content with his performance, Klaosen chased his own shot and grabbed the offensive rebound.

Forced into fouling, the Warriors had a shot to tie the game after Klaosen split his free throws. Darren Ng (16 points, eight rebounds) got himself a good shot but was off target as he struggled with his shot all night. Woodville's Fraser Gehrich (12 points, nine rebounds) grabbed the offensive board and found Nixson but he also missed.

Reed and Dylan Rawson (18 points) sealed the victory for Sturt at the line in what is currently an incredible run for the Sabres, now winners of 10 of their past 12 games and full of ccconfidence beating last year's champions. They will meet the Norwood Flames in the Grand Final.
