Rnd 13: Tigers Women with comfortable win over Mavericks

By Jake Stoubos
Southern Tigers 93 | Eastern Mavericks 69

The Southern Tigers have entered the top four after defeating the Eastern Mavericks on their home court in impressive fashion last weekend.

The Tigers were dominant right form the onset with Ta’rea Cunnigan scoring a basket within seconds, giving her side the early lead they were after. The Mavericks retaliated shortly after with some nice teamwork and play but were committing too many fouls early on, allowing for some easy free-throws to be made. This saw the Tigers take a 25-13 lead at quarter time.

Cunnigan had yet another fiery start in the second, scoring two baskets back to back and sending her team into a nice flurry of offensive play for a few minutes. The Mavericks just couldn’t match the speed, ball movement and explosiveness of the Tigers who closed out the first half with a three-pointer by Kelsie Rutland in the final seconds to leave the halftime score at 55-29.

The third quarter was relatively even with the ball continuously moving up and down the court, allowing for some quick shooting to be made. Brooke Basham made a stellar three-point shot for her Mavericks at the 7 minute mark but despite this shift in momentum though and Eastern’s improved form, they still trailed 42-78 at three quarter time.

To the Maverick’s credit they did not back down as they played their best quarter yet in the final period. They were first to score and rallied a little comeback mid-way through, however it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Tigers. In the end, the Southern Tigers’ early dominance paid off ending the match at 93-69.

Mollie McKendrick and Ta’Rea Cunnigan both had imposing games for their Tigers scoring 28 and 24 points respectively.

Brooke Basham was best on ground for her Mavericks accumulating 23 points, 5 assists and 4 steals.
