Rnd 14: Sabres Women come back strong to overcome Warriors

By Connor Rice

Sturt Sabres 60 | Woodville Warriors 52

The Woodville Warriors faced off with the Sturt Sabres on Saturday night. Out of the gate Woodville started really strong, getting good looks inside and pushing the ball on the break. Woodville typically tend to press the ball off the inbound and this was pivotal in them harassing the Sabres’ guards and looking like they were running away with the game. The inside presence of Tavarsha Scott Williams really caused havoc for the Sabres forwards.

However the remaining quarters were a different story as the Sabres made some key adjustments and started knocking down some outside looks. A major key for Sturt was the monster game from Jade Johnson who led the comeback for the Sabres. Johnson’s scoring has been always been linked to strong Sabres games and this week was no different. Burgess and Gibbons also chipped in well finishing with 10 and 8 points respectively.

It was really in the second half that the Sabres took over as they got out on a strong 10 point run after the half ended with only 2 points in it. Hitting multiple outside shots as well as playing a much more physical inside defence with a greater emphasis on crashing the defensive glass, the Sabres opened up an 11 point lead. The Warriors actually finished the game incredibly strongly as the lead got back down to 7 points with only 1:30 remaining but the Sabres held on as time ran out for the Warriors.

It was an incredibly physical and close game as two very even squads faced off. Now positioned at 6th and 7th both teams will be looking to get a roll on as the league gets into its closing weeks and playoff berths get settled.

Round 15: Saturday, 2 July at 6.30pm
Sturt Sabres v Eastern Mavericks @ Pasadena
Woodville Warriors v West Adelaide @ St Clair
