Rnd 15: Flames outrun Lions in victory

By Mark Halliday

Norwood Flames 79 | Central Districts Lions 68

The Norwood Flames shook off a largely forgettable second quarter and put in a dominating third to overcome a fighting Central Districts Lions team, 79-68 at Mars on Saturday night.

After a back and forth opening 10 minutes, the Lions had shut down the Norwood offence for most of the second quarter. Chris Clausen's (15 points, 12 rebounds) triple with 3:31 until half time gave Centrals a 10 point lead while the Flames had only managed one point as a team.

However, the Flames would respond by snatching the momentum of the game with a 7-0 run to end the half. Matt Lycett (17 points, 8 rebounds) hit a pair of free throws, Adrian Blom (6 points) scored under the basket and Andrew Webber (15 points, 5-10 3P) hit a triple to end the quarter down 34-31.

Lycett took the lead for Norwood in the first minute on a three and the Flames never looked back. The Flames poured on the points as the threes continued to drop. Interestingly, Norwood made more shots beyond the arc than inside, 15 threes compared to 13 twos. Lycett, Webber, Ben Howell (19 points, 4-7 3P, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 steals), Ian O'Boyle (11 points) and Daniel Webber (8 points, 7 rebounds) all knocking down shots in a 29-11 quarter that gave Norwood control of the game.

If that wasn't bad enough for the Lions, Daniel Carlin (13 points) limped off the court and would not return midway through the third.

The Lions made a small comeback in the closing stages of the game after letting the lead blow out to as many as 26 points in the fourth. Time was not on their side and the Flames huge lead was enough to hold on to victory.
