Rnd 16: Warrior Women heat up with win over South

By Kieren Vartuli
Woodville Warriors 79 | South Adelaide 51

Last Saturday, the Warriors played very well together showing some good signs for the coming games, while the South Adelaide Panthers were extremely cold from the field.

Woodville moved the ball around well which allowed them to find some easy buckets. This in turn gave them an advantage, not only on the scoreboard, but also mentally. Woodville were performing on both ends of the hardwood in the first as they kept South Adelaide under 10 points by the end of the first quarter.

Starting the 2nd term, the Warriors were up 9-points and by the 6:30 mark they increased that to 15-points. Notably, the Panthers were struggling to defend Woodville import Tavarsha Scott who shot an astounding 67% (10-15) from the field. Scott flirted with a double-double for the evening tearing down 8 rebounds but she wasn’t the only trouble for the Panthers as Katherine Perkas notched a double-double with 20-points, 16 rebounds (6 offensive). South continued to play very physically and were able to shut down the final Woodville possession keeping the difference at 14-points.

During the halftime break, Panthers coach Vicki Kelson must have fired up her girls as they came out hot during the 3rd term. South Adelaide had some impressive highlight plays, which could have helped inspire a comeback but the Warriors stopped that. Woodville turned up the defensive pressure and started forcing turnovers including a beautiful shot-clock violation.  By the end of the term, the Warriors were ahead 60-43 and looked to have this one sealed.

After appearing to take their foot off the accelerator coming out of the halftime break, the Warrior women put it back down and were able to make a statement. Panther turnovers were critical in this game as they finished with 16, 4 more than their opponents. As the final siren blew, the Warriors walked off the court with a 28-point victory.

Round 17: Saturday, 16 July at 6.30pm
