PIVOT City’s reign as the best domestic men’s basketball team in the region has continued after winning the 2014 Geelong Basketball League Division 1 Winter Championship title.

The 59-56 win over YMCA is the fifth straight success for the Pivotonians.

But they didn’t have it all their own way.

After Pivot City opened up an eight-point lead at quarter time, Y steadied to cut the margin to five at the main break.

With YMCA guard Lewie Varley making big shots from beyond the arc, the difference was just one point at three-quarter time.

However, Pivot was able to main its composure down the stretch to take the title.

Talisman Jason Reardon was at his best with 25 points for the winners, while fellow veteran James Walker contributed 12 points.

Varley knocked down five three-point attempts on his way to a game-high 24 points for YMCA, while brother Emerson finished with 12.

YMCA overcame a second half surge from Dolphins to wins its first women’s Winter Championship since 2008 with a nailbiting 50-49 result.

The minor premier appeared headed for victory when they led by as much as 11 during the third quarter.

However, Dolphins were able to rally and took the lead for the first time late in the final period.

Youngster Shae French was able to maintain her composure to knock down two free throws inside the final minute which put YMCA back in front.

Dolphins had two late chances to claim victory but were unable to find the winning basket.

Veteran Charmaine Ferguson was outstand for YMCA as she poured in a game-high 24 points.

Kathy Mallon was next best for the winners with eight points.

Star duo Vicki King and Maddy McMahon were kept to just four appoints apiece.

Cortney Williamson worked hard all night for Dolphins with 18 points, while Kim Martin finished with 12.

The result was a reflection of the evenness of the two teams, with no margin ever greater than nine during their five meetings in 2014.
