SEASON REVIEW: KILSYTH COBRAS

KILSYTH COBRAS

Wins - 12
Losses – 3
Standing – 1st
2015 result – 11 wins, 4 losses

THE GOOD

Winning 11 of their first 12 games for the year, Kilsyth always looked the favourites for the Championship and proved their worth with two impressive post-season victories to go back-to-back in 2016. Shawn Russell was the team’s leading rebounder with 7.8 a game while scoring 15.3 points at 50% shooting and Daniel Del Toso joined him in double-figures with 14.3 points. A bevy of role players can be thanked for taking out the title this year though with Joshua Allison, veteran Shaun Groenewegen, Damon Fent and Michael D’Amelio all contributing.

THE BAD

Two losses to the Roller Hawks and one to the Wheelcats by an average margin of 16 points in the regular season would have cast a few doubts while the Cobras had to fight tooth and nail in the Semi-Final to escape Perth by a point.

STANDOUT PERFORMER

Taking home the High-Point MVP award, Tristan Knowles led Kilsyth to back-to-back Championships after finishing third in the league for scoring with 27 points per game and second for assists with 10.9 while adding 6.3 rebounds. He capped off that magnificent performance to blow Perth away in the Grand Final with 28 points on 12-22 shooting, 14 rebounds and 16 assists compared to the Wheelcats’ tally of 14 assists.

Next Year

The Cobras’ excellent performances in the past two post-seasons will have them installed as the early favourites in 2017 when they will attempt a three-peat. Rising through the ranks, Rollers Fent and Russell provide superb back-up for the likes of Knowles, D’Amelio and Del Toso and the return of that core will certainly improve those Championship hopes while Brian Carminati is one to watch in the future.
