Statement – SA Country Basketball

In recent days there has been an incident involving mobile telephones and actions taken that we wish to clarify.

In the letter received by all players prior to team selections our policy on mobile phones includes the following statement;

Any player discovered to have a second phone, hidden from their team manager, will be sent home immediately. This will be at the expenses of player/parents and no refund (besides unspent meal money) will be forthcoming.

Four athletes were found to have, or have had, second mobile phones in their possession and a decision was made to send these four athletes home.

A review of the decision was undertaken by Council Executive members last night and subsequently the penalty was reduced to a 2 game suspension. There were several factors leading to this decision, most important was the development and welfare of the remaining team members.

The policy is clear and the consequences are unquestionable – any further breaches of the policy will only result in athletes being sent home immediately.

Executive Officer
