2014 Big V Season Wrap

A quick look back at the Big V season, starting with the Youth Champ Women who went down to Knox 47 - 57 in yesterday's Grand Final, but won many admirers with their gritty effort and still bring home the runners-up pennant (we think our first Big V pennant of any sort for many years). On the stats sheet, the girl created more shot attempts than Knox, were even in boards and our bench was outstanding, contributing 20 points to Knox 5 ... but it was just the field % that made the difference and we acknowledge the great defensive game that Knox played, especially in the third quarter. Across the season, Amelia Smith led the way with 11 points and 7 boards per game. A great season from the girls and if the core stays together, they will be up there again next season.

Our Champ Women were narrowly edged out of finals in the last game, also a great effort with a bit of a patched up team and a number of girls stepping up from the Youth Women each week. An outstanding year from Funda Nakkasoglu, racking up 20 points per game and great backup from Lauren Pearce with 11 points and over 7 boards per game. With Funda now off to college in the US, there's a bit of recruiting and rebuilding to do for season 2014/15.

Our Youth Champ Men had a bit of an up and down season, notching some great wins over teams near the top of the ladder, but not quite getting it done in critical games and just missing out on a finals berth. Richard Oryem led the stats sheet with just under 14 points and 4 boards a game, while Jordan Little was also strong with just over 13 points and 9 boards a game. There's just a bit more polish and a bit more size would be nice and the boys will be positioned to take the next step next season and see finals action.

Our Champ Men had a challenging season, with a key recruit never hitting the floor all season and a limited roster for a number of games. Never the less, the boys on the court gave it their all and still made it to finals action, going down to Sherbrooke in the first round. Across the season, Thadd Varmall was outstanding in his first season at Boomerland, putting up just under 25 points and 4 boards per game. Liam Norton was a great support with 19 points per game. Overall a slightly disappointing season given the initial expectations, but the boys gave it their best shot.

And so attention now quickly turns to season 2015 ... Big V is an important pathway within our Club, so decisions will need to be made on how best to build the program for future sustainability and success ... watch this space.
