Big V Weekly Wrap Round 1

Some tough match ups for our Boomers Big V teams in Round 1 of the season. Our Youth Champ men continued their great start to the season with a convincing win against the Melbourne Tigers, but all other teams went down.

Still, it's early days and there's plenty to build on - here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

After a tough first up game against the Dandenong Rangers, another challenging Round 1 match up for our Youth Champ women in taking on last season's Grand Final opponents the Knox Raiders.

A definite improvement on the first game, but the girls let themselves down again with average shooting, managing only 31% from the field to Knox 45%. The Boomers actually matched the Raiders across the game with shot opportunties. but just could not find the bottom of the net, going down 65 - 78.

In her first season of Youth Championship, Emma Pearce was outstanding for the Boomers, nabbing 27 points and 7 boards for the game. Great support from Kara Tessari with 16 points, but the contributions were thin from there.

It's not all bad for Coach Gary Fox, as a traditionally young youth team means there is plenty to work on over the coming weeks as new players adjust to the pace of Big V. Heads up girls and keep working hard.

Youth Championship Men

No such early season adjustments for our Youth Men, as a strong returning core team means that the boys have settled straight in and notched a second convincing win against the Melbourne Tigers 94 - 72.

The Boomers looked a little stratchy early as the Tigers edged out to an lead with the shots not dropping for the boys. But a blazing few minutes just before half time, including a big three point bomb from Ernst Kruger on the half time buzzer saw the Boomer take a 12 point half time lead.

The Tigers fought on in the third quarter until the Boomers poured on on again in the last stanza to record a strong win.

Tom Kielty was solid all game with 18 points and 9 boards to lead the sheet, while the addition of Ernst Kruger (18 points and 7 boards) has added a new dimension to the team. "Freddy" is a tough match up for any opponent, hitting 4 from 5 from downtown for the game. Young gun Harry Fayle was also impressive at point, with 13 points and dishing out 3 assists.

A solid start to the season for Coach Rob Grieve and the boys, still early days but the Boomers are showing huge potential for the season.

State Championship Women

A new look team for our Championship Women will take some time to bed in, with the loss of Funda Nakkasoglu (in particular) to college leaving a big hole to fill. This has been balanced somewhat with a number of players crossing from Knox in the absence of the Raiders fielding a SEABL team this season, but the team will take a few weeks to gel.

No Lauren Pearce on court did not help either, so a final scoreline of 57 - 69 against the fancied Waverley Falcons was not such a bad result. There is plenty of work ahead for Coach Matt Papps and the girls, the next few games will give a better indication of where the team will be at this season.

Young Emma Pearce doubling up for the weekend from Youth League played another outstanding game, with 14 points and 3 boards, while new guard Phillippa Whelan came off the bench for 14 points and 4 boards.

The Boomers created way more shot opportunities than the Falcons, but the ball just did not find the bottom of the net enough. Plenty to look forward to for our Champ Women over the next few weeks as the team game builds.

State Championship Men

To be somewhat blunt, it all went pear shaped for our Champ Men, up against perennial power house the Waverley Falcons.

Again, the Boomers created more shot opportunities than the Falcons, but a 33% field goal effort to the Falcons ripping 52% told the tale. After this one, it's just going to be a case of get back to training, and move onto next week for the boys.

Scott Cuffe did his bit with 21 points and 10 boards, while Liam Norton chipped in with 17 points. Boomers new import KGG raked in 8 boards, but struggled for shooting touch in his first hit out.

Plenty of work to do this week for Coach Ben Draper and the boys.

Round 1 of Big V for season 2015 is done and dusted - a huge double header coming up next Sunday afternoon 22nd March at East Doncaster Secondary College as our Youth and Champ men's teams take on the Diamond Valley Eagles in the local darby.

Our Big V teams need your support so get on out to EDSC next Sunday for the best of Big V basketball. Go Boomers !
