Big V Weekly Wrap Round 12

Big V 300

Our Big V Women flew the flag in Round 12, with our Youth Women nailing double header wins for the weekend, while our Champ Women comfortably accounted for McKinnon.

Another tough loss by our Youth Men to ladder leader's Kilsyth - the boys were in the lead at the last break, but a six man rotation for the game saw them run out of legs in the last quarter to go down in a heartbreaker.

Mixed bag for our Champ Men, just holding off the Melbourne Tigers on Saturday night, but being completely outclassed by McKinnon on Sunday.

Here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

A relative tight game for the girls on Saturday night, with the Sandringham Sabres taking it up to the Boomers for most of the game. The girls just did enough at the key times of the game to hold off the Sabres 68 - 56 in an unconvincing win. Bridgett O'Neill led the sheet with 15 points, while Keira Rowe and Amelia Smith chipped in with 12 and 11 respectively.

You will notice that Emma Pearce was not mentioned in the Saturday game, but yes she did play, it was just a quiet one for Em. But on Sunday against Kilsyth, the E-train came to play and tore the Cobras apart. Coach Gary Fox would have been much happier with the team effort, as the girls won 87 - 53.

Emma Pearce destroyed the opposition with 34 points and 14 boards (11 offensive) - another Blue Carpet performance, well done Emma. Keira Rowe and Olivia Wests were there in support with 12 points each, while Dani Calvisi chipped in with 10 points. A much better overall performance by the Boomers.

State Championship Women

By all reports this was not a terribly inspiring game, but our Champ Women just had to get it done to grab an important away win against the McKinnon Cougars.

The girls started slowly, but cranked it up over the last three quarters to record a convincing 69 - 42 win.

Big game from Loz Pearce with 17 points and 9 boards, plus plenty of support from Taylor Hall, Courtney Collins and Amelia Smith with 12 points each.

Youth Championship Men

Huge game again for our Youth Men, who shot out of the blocks to stun the Kilsyth Cobras early in the game to lead by 13 points at quarter time.

With a 6 man rotation (not sure what happened there), this seemed to suit the Boomers as the teamwork gelled and the boys matched it with Kilsyth through the next two quarters.

Unfortunately when it mattered, the limited rotations caught up with the boys and after leading by 9 going into the last quarter, the key shots just did not drop and the Boomers came up agonisingly short, going down 72 - 75.

Super human effort from Ernst Kruger, who notched up 18 points and a massive 16 boards, 16 points to Richard Oryem, 13 points for Evan Solakidis, 11 points for Harry Fayle and a double double of 10 points and 13 boards for Tom Kielty.

Very tough loss for the Boomers - just that one more sub may have made all the difference.

State Championship Men

On paper, it should have been a routine home win for our Champ Men against the lowly Melbourne Tigers, but the Tigers had other ideas. The Boomers led early, but the Tigers fought back to have the game evenly poised at the final change.

It was basket for basket in the last stanza, with a Scott Cuffe basket with 30 secs left drawing the scores level. The Tigers had the chance to win it, but the shot wouldn't go and the game went to overtime. In OT, it was again Cuffe nailing the big three with under a minute to play and this time the Tigers could not respond, with the Boomers falling over the line 82 - 80.

Cuffe was the standout with 25 points and 9 boards, while KGG was huge with a big double double of 14 points and 13 boards. Beston and Whitehead chipped in with 10 points each.

The boys had to back up again on Sunday against the McKinnon Cougars and ... well .... we don't want to talk about it. The Cougars swamped the Boomers 105 - 63. Tired - enough said.

Next weekend, our Youth Women have the weekend off, while our Champ Women visit Eltham on Saturday night. The men have a home double header this Saturday night 20th June at EDSC - our Youth Men take on Sandringham while the Champ Men host Corio Bay. Big games for both teams - be at EDSC this week to support our Big V Boomers.
