Big V Weekly Wrap Round 14

Big V 300

Well you don't get much better than five wins from five games - a cracking weekend for our Big V Boomers. All teams grabbed big wins, including our Youth Men with a critical double header weekend, including a huge away win.

Here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

A big match up for our Youth Women against their nearest challenger on the ladder, the Nunawading Spectres.

After an even first period, the girls stumbled in the second as nothing would go in and the usual offensive rhythm went missing. The Spectres led comfortably by 13 at the half and the Boomers looked in trouble.

But half time worked wonders, and the composure returned as the girls found their mojo and it was Nunawading starting to look out of sync. It was a big second half for the Boomers as they dominated the final part of the game to run out 71 - 57 victors.

Emma Pearce led the sheet again with 20 points and 8 boards, while Kara Tessari had a great game with 18 points. Bridgett O'Neill dominated the glass with 14 boards.

A key win for the girls at this time of the season as they close out the head to head against the Spectres for the season - but Coach Gary Fox will no doubt be looking for a more consistent four quarters in the lead up to finals.

Youth Championship Men

The boys have had the wobbles the last few weeks, so it was a critical weekend with a big double header challenge to take on.

First up on Saturday night, the Boomers started slowly with an average first quarter, but then dominated the rest of the game with a better defensive effort to run out 86 - 68 winners against the Sandringham Sabres.

Jordan Little was huge with 24 points and 7 boards, also great contributions from Evan Solakidis (19 points/10 boards) and Ernst Kruger (16 points/11 boards).

Backing up on Sunday, this was a big challenge in an away game against McKinnon and with a very short bench due to injuries. The Boomers started well and held a narrow lead through most of the game, but the Cougars mounted a big challenge in the last period as the boys tired. And while it was by no means convincing, the Boomers held on for a narrow, but deserved 60 - 58 win.

Young gun Harry Fayle led the sheet with 18 points, while Jordan Little was again important with 16 points. A double double for Ernst Kruger with 14 points and 12 boards, while Evan Solakidis continued his great form with 9 points and 12 boards.

Coach Rob Grieve would be pleased with the weekend, but hoping to get players back from injury for the next few games.

State Championship Women

Another important away game for our Champ Women against the Diamond Valley Eagles, looking to maintain momentum and their hold on fifth position on the State Champ ladder.

The Boomers looked pretty comfortable through this game, despite a small hiccup in the third quarter, and controlled most of the game for a 77 - 58 win. The shooting was solid, and with some young players stepping up to fill gaps, the team work is still sound and the girls combine together well.

Taylor Hall was a solid contributor with 18 points and 8 boards, while young Amelia Smith was impressive with 18 points and 6 boards. Lauren Pearce continues her good form with 17 points and 9 boards.

A solid team effort and the girls just need to keep winning.

State Championship Men

And finally, our Champ Men had a solid home win, comfortably accounting for the Werribee Devils 83 - 63.

The Boomers jumped out of the blocks early and always seemed to have the measure of the Devils, who could not mount a serious fighback. The boys pretty simply had a solid shooting game and a defensive effort able to contain the Werribee offense.

Scotty Cuffe led the sheet with a big double double of 22 points and 12 boards, while Liam Norton had 17 points and a stellar 11 assists. KGG chimed in with 17 points and Karl Beston had 12 points.

This was a key win as Werribee are just below the Boomers on the ladder, with the boys now holding down sixth position over the Devils. The next few games will be key for the Boomer's finals aspirations.

A traditional State Champ double header next Saturday night at EDSC, with our Champ Women taking on Sherbrooke at 6 pm, while local rivals Eltham are visiting to take on our Champ Men at 8 pm.

Our Youth Men have the Sunday afternoon game at home, taking on the Waverley Falcons at 1 pm.
