Big V Weekly Wrap Finals Week 2

Big V 300

Big V finals for 2015 are now in full swing as all divisions have entered their finals campaign.

It was a big weekend for our Big V teams, with our Youth Women advancing to the Grand Final with an outstanding preliminary final win over title favourites the Melbourne Tigers. Our Champ Women also survived a nail biting elimination final against the Waverley Falcons at EDSC on Saturday night.

Our Champ Men had a tough assignment in their elimination final against the Waverley Falcons. The boys fought hard all game but could not quite match the fire power of the Falcons to end their 2015 season.

Youth Championship Women

The pundits had this one in the book before the game started, as the Melbourne Tigers had only lost a single game all season and that one by a solitary point.

So it looked like mission impossible for Coach Gary Fox and our Youth Champ Women – but as the old adage says, finals are a whole new ball game.

In short, the girls came to play and dominated the game early to establish a big early lead. With Gemma Fyffe on fire and Emma Pearce working hard in the paint, the Tigers were stunned as the lead blew out to 20 points at half time.

Both teams were struggling to adjust to a high foul count, but the Tigers fought back in the third quarter to try and close the gap. The final quarter was manic (13 - 10 foul count ??? Wow !) but the lead was good enough, as the Boomers iced the game from the foul line to grab a memorable win 84 – 72.

Gemma Fyffe put in a blinder, with 19 points and 3 boards. Great support from the E-train Emma Pearce with 16 points, while Olivia West has 13 points. Bridgett O'Neill dominated the glass with 12 boards.

So the girls advance to the big dance, a Grand Final match up against the Knox Raiders in a repeat of the 2013/14 final. Last season the Boomers could not quite match it with Knox in a tight contest to finish runners-up – we’re expecting the same again, but lets hope the girls can get over the line this time around to secure the title. The game will be at Knox, tip off times to be advised early in the week.

State Championship Women

Our Champ Women won some critical games near the end of the season to clinch fourth on their ladder and earn a home elimination against the Waverley Falcons. The Falcons were a contender earlier in the season before losing a couple of key players to injury.

The Boomers started well in this one with Pip Whelan on fire early with three triples to kick start the game. The Falcons steadied, but in a tight low scoring affair the girls held an eight point lead at half time.

In the third quarter, Loz Pearce started to light it up and a couple of big baskets from Tennille Nash had the home crowd cheering as the lead blew out to over 20 points and the Boomers looked home.

But in the final quarter the girls started to look as though they were playing to protect the lead and Waverley steadily closed the gap. The lead was down to five as the Falcons landed a bomb to make the lead two with 15 seconds on the clock, but it was Boomers ball. The girls did not quite seem ready for a trap and with no call on the hustle defence a held ball gave Waverley the ball back with 10 seconds to play. This time the Boomers were ready and a good defensive set meant a desperate triple for the win did not hit the ring and girls had hung on for a 61 – 59 win.

Lauren Pearce let the sheet for the Boomers with 17 points and 6 boards, with great support from Pip Whelan 16 points and Tenille Nash 12 points. Taylor Hall could not buy a basket at the offensive end but reeled in a massive 16 boards.

The Boomers live to fight another week and advance to a semi final match up against the Southern Peninsula Sharks next weekend. By no means an easy away game, but if the Boomers play well they have the match ups to take it up to the Sharks.

State Championship Men

Our Champ Men had an elimination final match up against the Waverley Falcons who have been title contenders in recent years. The boys had nothing to lose and gave it their best shot, keeping in touch for much of the game and only being a 10 points down going into the last quarter.

The Boomers seemed in touch but unfortunately the Falcon’s firepower found their shooting touch in the critical last quarter and Waverley drew away for a 89 – 64 victory.

For the Boomers, Scott Cuffe had a cracking game to earn a Blue Carpet nomination, with 20 points, 10 boards, 5 steals and 5 assists - great game Scotty ! Karl Beston had a strong game in the paint with 13 points, while Jimmy Todd and KGG chipped in with 11 points each.

A tough end to the season for the boys and they bow out of contention for season 2015. But certainly gave it their best shot and did us proud, we saw some cracking games at EDSC during the season.

So our women's Big V teams fly the flag for next week, games times will be announced in due course ... Go Boomers !
