Big V Weekly Wrap Finals Week 3

Big V 300

A big weekend of Big V action as our Youth Women played for the title against the Knox Raiders for the second year in a row.

And our Championship Women had a tough knock out semi final against Southern Peninsula to keep their season alive.

Here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

It was a case of deja vu in the 2015 Youth Championship Women Grand Final as the Boomers took on the Knox Raiders for the title for the second year in a row.

And as with last season, this was a tight and tough Grand Final, as you would expect from these two teams. The Raiders with home court advantage got the better of the start, opening up a 19 - 12 lead as the Boomers struggled to contain the Knox scoring options.

After some adjustments from Coach Gary Fox at quarter time, the defensive effort lifted and the Boomers were able to shut down the Knox offense and fight back into the game. By half time the gap had closed to 3, with Olivia West starting to cause Knox some problems and Bridgett O'Neill finding space to score.

The third quarter was a dour defensive struggle with both teams finding it hard to score and the lead remaining with Knox at 3 points with a quarter to play.

At the start of the last quarter, a huge O'Neill trey locked the scores away and it was basket for basket for a number of minutes. With under a minute to play Olivia West made a clutch play to grab the lead for the Boomers by a point, but a foul on the next play send the Raiders to the line to in turn regain the lead.

On the critical play of the game, the Boomers lost the ball and were forced to foul again - with only seconds remaining, Knox could not completely seal the game and the last desperate hail mary in the final seconds was not enough and the girls were one point short at 45 - 46.

Olivia West had 11 points, while Bridgett O'Neill had 10 points and 9 boards. Emma Pearce worked hard for 9 points and 12 boards.

A great season by such a young team with many new players - congratulations to the girls and Coaches Gary Fox and Brendan Jackson on a fabulous season.

There should be some great years ahead for our Youth Championship Women's team in Big V.

State Championship Women

Our State Champ Women had the long trip south to take on Southern Peninsula in a do or die semi final. The teams had split their two games this season and the pundits fancied the young Sharks team on their home court.

The Boomers were dependant on the edge in experience and have a good shooting night, which in the end proved to be the difference.

The girls opened well with some good team work and a couple of big Taylor Hall treys in the middle of the quarter opened a handy 5 point lead at quarter time. The Sharks seemed content to pack the key way and a couple more big bombs from Pip Whelan and Courtney Collins doubled the lead, with the Boomers up 36 - 26 at half time.

There was expectation of a Southen Pen fightback, but the Boomers had too many options, with young guns Amelia Smith and Courtney Collins chipping in to keep the scoreboard ticking. With less than a minute in the third, another Taylor Hall triple had the lead at 16 and the Boomers were looking good, but no doubt had memories of last week in nearly letting a 20 point lead evaporate.

But this time the girls were solid in the last and held their nerve for a well deserved 68 - 52 win to keep their season alive and earn a preliminary final match up next week against Hume City.

Taylor Hall led the way with a big game of 17 points, including 5 from 8 at the three point line. Amelia Smith and Courtney Collins were key contributors with 12 and 11 points each. A great team game from the Boomers that will provide confidence for next week.

In next week's preliminary, Hume City will go in again as favourites, but the Boomers knocked off the Broncos at home a few weeks back. In will all have to go right again, but the girls have a good shot at pulling off another upset to make their Grand Final.

Game details will be announced early in the week - Go Boomers !
