In arguably the best grand final in the past seven years, the scores were level early in the final term. Kicking against the wind, the Dogs dug deep and managed to create some breathing space in the last 10 minutes of the quarter, to extend the lead to 14. A late goal to the Blues cut the margin to 8 when the siren sounded. The Blues will be disappointed by some shows of poor discipline, which cost them dearley in the closing minutes. One penalty saw them gift a goal to Bulldogs captain, Wayne Sullivan, who played on after receiving a free and was unceremoniously dumped after shooting on goal.
Our hearts go out to Craig Varcoe, who was stretchered into an ambulance 2-minutes before 3/4 time with a suspected broken hip. The game was delayed by almost an hour due to the wait for the ambulance.
Best on Ground was awarded to Bulldog forward/utility Zak Williams.
Update: Bulldog defender Craig Varcoe was released from hospital on Saturday evening with torn hip ligaments. He was able to attend the Dogs prize giving function.
