WILCHER READY TO HEAT IT UP

Townsville Basketball today announced the signing of former Melbourne Tigers guard Josh Wilcher to lead the Beehive-QSolutions Heat in the 2016 QBL season. A product of Nunawading and Sandringham clubs in Melbourne and a star in the SEABL over the past 3 seasons, the signing of Wilcher is a huge boost to the team for 2016.

“Josh is the final piece to the puzzle for our team this season, with Mitch Norton not being available for the first time in a number of years we needed to fill the point guard position with an experienced professional, Josh fills that hole perfectly” said Heat Head Coach Rodney Anderson.

“While he isn’t quite as big as Mitch, Josh is an incredibly high IQ player, very crafty in pick & roll situations and already after just one training showed he has the leadership qualities which we need in this group. In every program he has played in, teams have been successful and his level of play is very consistent. I know he is going to be a very good player in the QBL”.

Wilcher had most recently been playing for the Plymouth Raiders in the British Basketball League (BBL) where he averaged 13.2ppg, 4.1rpg and 6.6apg (2nd in the league) as well as shooting 48% from the field.

“I’m excited to be here in Townsville and a part of the program this year, I know the team has missed the playoffs the last two seasons and I want to help us get back there this year. From what Rod has told me the north conference is very good in the QBL and I am going to get the chance to compete against NBL level guards every game” Wilcher said.

“It’s a great challenge for me to come into a new environment so close to the season starting and adapt. I’ve met all the guys on the team and I really like the group that I will get the chance to play with. I just want to help the team win and as a point guard put guys in positions where they can be successful offensively”.

The Beehive-QSolutions Heat head to Mackay this weekend for their final pre-season games against the defending champion Meteors before returning home to prepare for Cairns on Sunday 1st of May at The Furnace.

Season memberships are still available, if you want to be courtside at The Furnace for 8 action packed home games in 2016 call Townsville Basketball during business hours on 4778 3400.
