Brisbane Lady Capitals: QBL Season Opener v the Bears

Brisbane, QLD. – The Brisbane Lady Capitals open their 2016 QBL Regular Season this Saturday night with Round 1 at home v the Bundaberg Bears.

The Lady Caps tip off at 6pm at NAB Stadium.

Tickets can be purchased in person at the door. Adults - $10.00; Children - $5.00; Capitals Junior players and staff – Free (with hardcard). Wear your Caps Gear!

 

THE PRE-SEASON:

The Lady Caps saw their 5 game pre-season winning streak end on Saturday v Logan Thunder. The shorthanded Caps – playing without inspirational team captain and recent SEQ Stars WNBL recruit Amy Lewis, and Under 18 South Queensland State Representative Duo Isabelle Parker and Rachel Mate – trailed as much as 21 pts in the 3rd quarter. A second half rally led by veteran scoring guard Heidi Freeburn (18pts) and the dual interior presence of long time Capital, Mikaela King (14pts) and new recruit Emma McKenzie (15pts) saw the margin brought back to 1pt with 1:15 to go in the game, setting up a nail-biting finish for the 250 strong home crowd, before falling 62-65.

 

ROUND 1 v Bundaberg Bears:

Bundaberg has been one of the more consistently performing central pool teams of late, making Final Four appearances twice in the past four (4) seasons. In the 2015 Season, the Bears finished 6th in the regular season with a 10 – 7 record, before falling to eventual Champions Rockhampton in the Final Four.

Series Record: The Lady Caps have played the Bears on eight (8) occasions since 2012 with the Bears leading the series 5 - 3; including victories in the last two contests.

Last Meeting: The Lady Caps last played the Bears in Rd 10, 2015 at home in a closely fought contest, falling 85-89 after a grueling final quarter which saw the Lady Caps charge back after a double-digit deficit.

 

FAMILIAR FACES:

Mikhaela King returns for her 4th season with the Brisbane Capitals along with Heidi Freeburn and Victoria Aldred, who last played for the Lady Caps in their 2014 Finals Four run. Lastly, recent Brisbane Capitals Junior Representative player Madie Woodford returns for her second season.

 

NEW RECRUITS:

Newly appointed head coach, Rebecca Dudic worked diligently over the off-season to secure the much-sort-after talents of SEQ Stars Co-Captain Amy Lewis, and the inside presence of fellow SEQ Stars team-mate Emma McKenzie. Joining Amy and Emma are dynamic SEABL playmaking guard Ashton Eaton, athletic QBL defensive specialist Stacey Howard, and the leadership of QBL Veteran Katherine Hollis.

 

THE NEW GUARD:

The Brisbane Capitals have a proud history of player performance-development with the transition of numerous junior players to our senior ranks; 2016 is no different. The Lady Capitals welcome Rachel Mate, Isabelle Parker, Mia Teubler, Georgia Champion, Emma Read and Kayla Beverley to the Lady Capitals, and will watch closely as these talented athletes compete in the upcoming season.

SBL Women: The Brisbane Capitals SBL Women’s team also play at NAB Stadium this weekend in their Season opener v the Gold Coast. Tipoff is scheduled for 2pm.
