GBL Grand Finals Wrap Up & MVP

Lang Park Lions dominated proceedings having representation in all three major Grand Finals of the night.

Under 23 Men
St James 57 defeat Land Park 54
In the first game of the night, Lang Park burst out of the blocks with Jesse Ghee leading the way midway through the first period, holding a commanding lead. The Jimmie’s lads fought back after coach Berghan went to his bench, who were led by young thundercat, Jack Williams.

Both teams made consecutive runs at each other with the boys from St James holding off a fast finishing Lang Park for the Championship win.

GBL Women Gold
Lang Park 59 defeat Northern Galaxy 54
In the Women’s Gold grand final, Lang Park was searching for back-to-back titles and their defence was certainly tested by the girls from the Galaxy. A slow but close affair, neither team were able to gain ascendency on each other and scores were tight at the half.

The Galaxy ran into some foul trouble in the second half and Lang Park pushed on for the 5 point back-to-back Championship win!

GBL Men Gold
Lang Park 72 defeat Uni Reds 67
The Men’s Gold grand final this season was set to look very different as for the first time in a number of seasons the “big dance” did not feature the North Brisbane Dragons. However this matchup still was a highly anticipated showdown. From the onset Lang Park looked to be on a mission led by a dominant Ryan Jeffries in the first half taking a 48 – 31 lead into the main break.

However, the second half was a different story with the Uni Reds making a charge led by Kurt Thompson and ably assisted by Louis Savill who came off the bench and knocked down a couple of crucial baskets to bridge the gap to just 3 points late in the game. Lang Park showed veteran leadership and experience down the stretch to hold off a very gallant Uni Reds for the 5 point victory and their first Championship win of the GBL in a number of years.
