Classification of teams

Effective immediately, Basketball NSW has changed the way teams are classified in the Waratah League, the new by-law now aligns the Waratah League to be consistent with other leagues.

We have changed this by-law because ladders that use “points” as the means of classifying teams is more widely used for tournaments or events where all teams have played the same number of games by the end of the day or round, for example Olympic Games and World Championships.

By-Law 26. Classification of Teams.

26.1 Compilation of ladder, each ladder is to show:

  • Games won; and
  • Games lost; and
  • Forfeits; and
  • Last 5 game win or loss; and
  • Streak; and
  • Points for; and
  • Points against; and
  • Points percentage (based on points for divided by points against); and
  • Percentage of games won.

26.2 Teams on each ladder will be ranked in order of percentage of games won.

26.3 At the end of the regular season, if more than two teams are equal in placing, a second classification will be established taking into account only the results of the games between the teams that are tied.

26.3.1  In the event that there are still teams tied after the second classification, then POINTS PERCENTAGE (i.e.  Points For ÷ Points Against x 100) will be used to determine the placing, taking into account only the results of  the games between the teams still tied.
