Take a shot and name the WNBL Bid Team!

Rockhampton Regional Council is working in partnership with CQUniversity Australia and Rockhampton Basketball to bid for a licence for a WNBL team which would see Rockhampton and the wider Central Queensland region receive regular national exposure, while also celebrating women in sport.

The three organisations today launched the CQUniversity Rockhampton WNBL Bid Name Our Team competition, giving residents the opportunity not only to become a part of history, but to take home the prize of priority season tickets to the team’s first season, and their very own replica singlet.

Rockhampton Region Mayor, Margaret Strelow, encouraged residents to get involved in the competition.

“Our community has a great sporting culture and as we’ve shown through hosting various national or international events, whether it’s basketball, hockey, swimming, netball or football, we know how to put on a good show and be competitive in the sporting arena,” Mayor Strelow said.

“We’re hoping the community will get behind the bid and help us choose a name for the new team that captures the spirit and future of our Region and sets us up as a force to be reckoned with.”

CQUniversity Vice Chancellor Scott Bowman said he was confident the venture would become a boon for female sport and local basketball, while building our local community identity more broadly.

"The naming competition and children's colouring competition give people the chance to get involved in our WNBL team right from the start to build a sense of ownership and affinity with the team," Professor Bowman said.

“We’re proud to support this initiative as part of our commitment to engagement with our community and we’re pleased to be able to support the promotion of Rockhampton and the wider CQ region to a national audience.”

Rockhampton Basketball President, Steve Richards, shared this enthusiasm saying the competition was just one of the early steps to show community support for the bid.

“We are confident that our partnership with Rockhampton Regional Council and CQUniversity will see us put forward a strong bid for the license and we’ll be able to see this team enter the 2017 WNBL season,” Mr Richards said.

From 11 July to 22 July, the Name Our Team competition will be open for entries at the below link and children are also welcome to enter a related colouring competition promoted through schools and at Hegvold Stadium.
