Rocky duo picked for Under 12s QLD Side

HIGH shooting Rockhampton basketballers Flynn Phelan and Israel Power have won a spot for Queensland Under-12 Boys at the National Schools Championships.

The pair was part of a solid Capricornia under-12 schoolboy team that contested the State Championships last month, and finished in sixth spot.

In a coup for the comparatively small Rockhampton Association, the duo was picked out of 10 teams from around Queensland contesting the State Championships.

The Queensland Schoolboys team is usually dominated by Brisbane and Cairns players, and it was unusual to get two from Rockhampton selected to play, Flynn's mother Heather Phelan said.

"It means they are playing at a very high standard," she added.

St Anthony's student Flynn said the State Championships was a tough competition, and selection was difficult.

"I was really happy when I found out we were in the team, it's the only sport I play, and I've played since Grade One - I like it because you get to meet new friends and it's a lot of fun," Flynn said.

Flynn, who played the big man role on the court, and Power, who was a point guard or wing, play for the Frenchville team and are coached at the Rockhampton Association by Rockhampton Rockets player Brad Kann.

Kann also helped the Capricornia team prepare for its State Championships campaign and he will assist the boys in preparation for the Nationals.

"He's a really good supporter and I look up to him as a role model," Flynn said.

Heights College student Israel Power knew Flynn through club basketball - and together the 12-year-olds had represented Rockhampton at the annual State Classics for the past three years.

Yesterday the boys left to join the rest of the Queensland under-12 team for a two day training camp, at Brisbane, and they will re-group for another training camp, ahead of the National Championships, in Perth, staged from August 17-23.
