Frenchville Panthers Stingers have come out victorious in the Division 1 Men’s lightning season on the back of some sharp shooting from ex NBL star Chris Cedar, who finished the game with 36 points.  Although the Stingers went into the game as favourites having beaten the White team in three of their previous four games, it was Frenchville White who got the early ascendency jumping out to a four point lead at the end of the first quarter.  In the second period it was the Cedar/Philp show with the two standout guards going head to head, each landing three big shots from behind the arc amongst a myriad of other scores.   During the second half the Stingers tightened up on the defense end, whilst  Cedar continued his offensive output, joined by up and coming Queensland representative Leon Christensen who finished with 8 second half points.  Although the game went down to the wire it was fitting that man of the match Cedar iced the win with some clutch free-throws.

In the Women’s Division 1 final the Blue and Gold team from Gladstone continued their undefeated season winning 77 to 51 against Frenchville Green.  Only 3 points separated the teams in the first quarter with Madelyn Willey shouldering much of the scoring responsibility for Blue and Gold and Frenchville benefiting from a balanced scoring attack.  Frenchville’s defense continued to hold strong through the second quarter, keeping the Blue and Gold lead to just 7 points.  Unfortunately the defense couldn’t hold in the second half with Katie Rose and Madelyn Willey providing the perfect inside outside combination for Blue and Gold, finishing the game with 19 and 26 points respectively.

Rockhampton Basketball’s senior competitions will now take a well deserved break over Christmas with the 10 week Summer Blitz set to kick off on January 12.
