Success for Wheelchair Basketball Course

Coaching Wheel Chair Basketball

Proudly sponsored by the Broadmeadows Basketball Association in conjunction with Basketball Victoria the introduction to Coaching Wheelchair Basketball was an outstanding success and a lot of fun for the participating coaches.

After an introduction to the basic rules and the players classification process coach and presenter Tim Downes, from Basketball Victoria the focus was on some of the similarities and points of difference when playing with a disability and from a chair.

While there were obviously many things different there was still offence , defence, shooting, passing, dribbling and specific skills and drills, that improve the capacity of players. Knowing the chair and the ability to make it work for you is a skill set that comes with experience. After a detailed explanation of how t work the chair it was on to the court to be put through some basic skills and drills.

I might add very basic for all of the participants. It was expressed a number of times that trying to play wheelchair basketball without a disability makes you appreciate the enormous skills and determination of players who pplay wheelchair basketball.

Participants were exposes to some fundamental wheelchair manoeuvres for offence and defence, dribbling and shooting. Looking at the following snapshots you can see the participants were focused, determined in learning the game from a very different perspective. All this while having lots of fun.

A sincere thanks to the Basketball Victoria staff Alice Hammond and Tim Downes for their time and effort.

Attendees at the “Coaching Wheelchair Basketball” course are exhausted after going through some of the fundamental skills required for playing basketball in a wheelchair and with variable disabilities.
