Week Two - SBL Players of the Week

The week two, Men’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to John Dickson of the Willetton Tigers.

There was plenty of hype around the SBL when Willetton signed John Dickson for the 2014 season and he has not disappointed!

After a 41 point performance in game one for the Tigers, Dickson has already put his hand up as a potential league MVP.

The question mark after week one was, could he back up that performance in Willetton’s tough double header against Rockingham and Cockburn in week two.

Dickson proved his week one performance wasn’t a one off and put up 28 points, 16 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in Friday’s narrow loss to the Flames, before leading the Tigers to their first win of 2014 as they defeated the Cockburn Cougars 102 to 89 on Saturday night where Dickson was again pivotal with 31 points and 11 rebounds.

Dickson looks to be a natural scorer with incredible athleticism and now leads the league in total points with exactly 100 points from three games.

It is a scary thought for opposition teams that 2013 All-star shooting guard and league leading three point shooter Quinn McDowell, is due to return and join Dickson in the Tigers line-up within the next coming weeks.

Other considerations for the award included;

Cooper Land (Rockingham): (26 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists), Caleb Palkert (Lakeside): (29 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assists), Ty Harrelson (South West): ( 27 points, 4 rebounds, 12 assists), Bradley Tinsley (Lakeside): (32 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) Odartey Blankson (Geraldton): (32 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists), Cory Cooperwood (Stirling): (29 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists), Damian Scott (Cockburn): (28 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), Lordan Franich (Goldfields): (26 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists), Dennis Tawhiti (Perth): (27 points, 13 rebounds, 1 assists), Drew Williamson (East Perth): (20 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists), Clive Weedon (South West): (27 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists), Trian Iliadis (Joondalup): (21 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists), Tommy Hannon (Goldfields): (29 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assists), Ben Purser (Perry Lakes): (26 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists), Taylor Mullenax (Mandurah): (26 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists) & Taylor Land (Rockingham): (35 points, 5 rebounds, 12 assists).

The week two, Women’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Amy Patton of the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers.

After a round one bye, the South West Slammers women faced a tough first up opponent in 2013 Grand Final Runners-up, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Amy Patton put in a dominant performance for the home side to record 21 points, 17 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the Slammers to a fourteen point victory over the Eastern Suns 50-64.

With Kim Sitzmann back in the USA and Zoe Harper not resigning for 2014, the Slammers are now looking to Amy Patton, a graduate out of Northern Arizona University to fill the void.

Patton has shown she has the ability to become a star of the SBL and fans will now be eagerly awaiting the return of fellow import Val Ogoke to join the line-up as the Slammers look to repeat their Championship winning efforts in 2012.

Other considerations for the award included;

Bianca Donovan (South West): (27 points, 7 rebounds), Kate Anthony (Perry Lakes): (17 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists), Dannielle Devenny (East Perth): (16 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists), Marita Payne (Cockburn): (12 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist), Ebony Antonio (Willetton): (22 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists), Antonia Edmondson (Willetton): (19 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist), Amber Land (Stirling): (12 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists), Jennie Rintala (Kalamunda): (11 points, 17 rebounds, 1 assist) and Samantha Whitcomb (Rockingham): (18 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist).
