Flames men, women continue hot start (Week 5 Friday night SBL wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames men's and women's SBL teams continued their hot start to the season on Friday night while East Perth and Perth split their matches to open Week 5 action.

There were two women's SBL matches on Friday night with the Schweigen East Perth Eagles beating the Perth Redbacks 68-60 and the Rockingham Flames downing the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 82-65.

The Eagles beat the Redbacks at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre and now have two wins for the season, one more than all of 2013, while the Redbacks have slipped to their seventh straight defeat to open 2014.

Stephanie Jones starred for the Eagles finishing with 33 points on 14-of-22 shooting from the field.

Nicole Jorre St Jorre also added 13 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists for the winning East Perth.

Jessica Jakens did all she could for the Redbacks finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds with Alix Hayward adding 13 points and nine boards, and Jessica Hughes 11 points.

Meanwhile, the Flames beat the Slammers at Mike Barnett Sports Complex by 17 points in a rematch of the 2012 grand final with Rockingham now remaining unbeaten after five games, and the Slammers slipping to 1-2.

Darcee Garbin led the way for Rockingham with 28 points and 20 rebounds on 11-of-22 shooting from the field in a massive performance.

Kaye Tucker added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists while Tarsha Fletcher contributed 11 points, Jacinta Bourne 10 (10 rebounds, six assists) and Samantha Whitcomb 10 points.

Lauren Jeffers worked hard for the Slammers with 22 points and 12 rebounds with Amy Patton adding 18 points and 15 boards.

And in the two men's matches in the SBL on Friday night, the Perth Redbacks beat the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 106-88 and the Rockingham Flames defeated the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 93-91.

The Redbacks improved to a 4-3 record with their impressive 18-point win over the Eagles.

Import Stan Okoye was the star for the Redbacks finishing with 34 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots on the back of shooting 11-of-20 from the field and a perfect 12-of-12 from the line.

Dennis Tawhiti also added 18 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 8-of-14 with Marshall Nelson also contributing 15 points.

Nathan Friend top-scored for the Eagles with 22 points with Kyle Armour scoring 18 to go with nine assists and six rebounds coming off his two 43-point matches last weekend.

Austin Kisselev also added 14 points and 10 rebounds for East Perth with Sunday Dech adding 13 points and Nikola Donlagic 10.

The Flames continued their terrific start to the 2014 men's season improving to a 6-1 record with their two-point win over the now 2-3 Slammers

Cooper Land was the star for Rockingham with 30 points and 13 rebounds with Tom Remmerswaal adding 21 points and eight rebounds, and Taylor Land 20 points and 11 assists.

Clive Weeden top-scored for the Slammers with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting with Ty Harrelson adding 19 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals.

Jonathan Todd Hendley also added 18 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots for South West.
