Week 9 Sunday SBL wrap

THE Rockingham Flames ended their losing streak and continued that of the Goldfields Giants in Sunday's Men's SBL action while the Perry Lakes Hawks and Kalamunda Eastern Suns split their two encounters.

Week 9 concluded on Sunday with the one Women's fixture that saw the Kalamunda Eastern Suns defeat the Perry Lakes Hawks 93-58 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The Perry Lakes Hawks Men were able to turn that result around beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 116-90 while the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames downed the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 108-100 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

The Eastern Suns Women were playing their only game of the weekend when hosting the Hawks on Sunday, and the Suns bounced back from losing their last two games following their one-point thrilling victory over Willetton back on Anzac Day.

Kalamunda improved to a 4-5 record on the season with the win while Perry Lakes slipped 7-3 with the Hawks unable to back up their win by four points over the Lakeside Lightning at Bendat Basketball Centre on Friday night.

The Eastern Suns came flying out of the blocks with 34 points to 17 in the opening quarter and they went on to lead 52-30 at the half. Kalamunda continued to extend its lead through the second half ending up winning by 35 points.

The Suns did well shooting 43 per cent from the field and 35 per cent from beyond the arc while the Hawks lost just 33 per cent and failed to hit a three-pointer on 11 attempts.

Kalamunda also outrebounded Perry Lakes 50 to 38 and forced the Hawks into 27 turnovers of which the Suns scored 33 points from.

Stacey Barr was the star of the game for the Eastern Suns with 33 points, eight steals and six assists on shooting 13-of-30 from floor and 6-of-16 from three-point range.

Casey Mijovic added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns with Rebecca Motroni contributing 16 points and Sarah McMahon 14 to go with 10 rebounds, four steals, three blocked shots and two assists.

Lauren Jeffers top-scored for the Hawks with 12 points, eight assists and three rebounds with Sarah Donovan contributing 11 points and seven boards, and Kate Anthony 10 points and five rebounds.

And in the Men's action on Sunday, the Hawks improved to a 7-6 record on the season by scoring a 26-point victory over Kalamunda. The Eastern Suns have now lost all 11 matches so far in 2016 and are on a 26-game losing streak dating back to last year.

The Hawks were coming off a nine-point win at home over the Lightning on Friday night and did well backing up on Sunday against the fresh Suns outfit delivering 45 points to 28 in the first quarter, and 36 to 11 in the second.

The Hawks led 81-39 at half-time and ended up cruising to the 26-point with Kalamunda to its credit scoring 37 fourth quarter points to bring some respectability back to the scoreboard.

Perry Lakes hit 38-of-83 from the field at 45 per cent and 10-of-35 at 28 per cent from three-point range while also getting to the line 42 times and hitting 30. The Hawks outrebounded the Suns 61 to 45 and despite 29 turnovers, they weren’t made to pay by the Suns.

Ryan O'Sullivan top-scored for Perry Lakes with 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals hitting 6-of-12 from three-point territory.

Brian Carlwell added 23 points, 20 rebounds, six blocked shots and two assists for the Hawks while Ben Purser finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, Rob Cassir 16 points, six assists and five boards, and Trent Criddle 10 points.

Geordie Murray top-scored for the Eastern Suns off the bench with 24 points with Kerrod Horn adding 11 points, nine boards and seven steals, Madison Stoveld 10 points and seven rebounds, and Tim Squire 10 points and six boards.

To conclude the round, the Flames Men ended their losing run at three beating a Giants team by eight points who have now lost their last three.

The win sees Rockingham improve to 7-6 on the season bouncing back from losing to the Lightning on Friday while Goldfields slips to 6-7 after also losing on the road to the Stirling Senators on Saturday night.

It was a seesaw affair all afternoon with the Flames leading by 12 at quarter-time but the Giants did well in the second quarter to trail by just three at the half. Rockingham stretched its lead to four heading into the fourth quarter and then stretched the margin by the end to eight points.

The Flames completely dominated the glass outrebounding the Giants 63 to 40 including 25 offensive boards that helped the Flames hold sway for the important win.

Cooper Land led the way for Rockingham with 26 points and eight rebounds with Ryan Godfrey adding 20 points and six boards.

Chudier Pal contributed 16 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Flames, Taylor Land 16 points, 11 boards and nine assists, Matthew Honey 13 points and seven rebounds, and Nebojsha Franich 11 points and 10 boards.

Jacob Holmen did all he could to try and get the Giants home finishing with 35 points, 13 rebounds and three assists shooting 16-of-28 from the floor and 3-of-6 from downtown.

Kenny Manigault added 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for Goldfields, Daniel Goodluck 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals, and Russell Hurst 10 points and seven boards.
