Coaches react to Week 3 of the SBL

SOME SBL men's and women's coaches shared their thoughts on how their respective third round weekends of the 2014 season went.

WOMEN'S
JOONDALUP WOLVES
Coach – Vlad Alava

We played Rockingham on Sunday afternoon and they were very impressive. It was the proverbial tale of two halves. We were up by about 18 at half-time and then it was the Sammy Whitcomb show. She had about 7-of-8 from three-point land and in watching the tape, two of them were deadset with hands in the face and I'm talking she hit step back, between the legs and behind the back three-pointers. The girl can play, definitely.

Coach - Ryan Petrik

The Wolves have the ability to make you look like a bottom four side with their elite defensive schemes, and that's what they did to us in the first half on Sunday. After averaging 88 points per game in the first three matches, the Wolves held us to 19 points with 1-of-13 from beyond the three-point line in the first half, completely taking us out of anything we tried to get into.

In the second half, we were finally able to run something that actually resembled our offence, and scored 49 points with 11-of-19 from beyond the three-point line. And once we started making shots, we finally started to play some defence as well. Obviously it helps having Whitcomb enter video game mode and going 7-of-8 from three, all off the dribble, in the second half.

MEN'S
VORIAN AGENCY EAST PERTH EAGLES
Coach – Adam Forde

We lost to Kalamunda on Friday and to say it was a pretty game to watch, it definitely wasn’t. We blew a 25-point lead and it is the third week in-a-row when we have built a comfortable lead and allowed the opposition to get back into it. To Kalamunda's credit, they were hitting big shots and making great plays, and they exposed some flaws that we had.

ROCKINGHAM FLAMES
Coach – Mark Utley

It was good to go to Joondalup and get the win against a polished well coached team. They shot the ball well and would win most games shooting the ball like they did. Our guys stayed together and that was pleasing.

Cooper Land played pretty good in the second half to secure a heart stopper. Again it was a team effort and with 18 guys pressing for selection, competition for positions is high and that is good. We also now have an arrival date for Ryan Godfrey and that will only make us deeper.

COLLIE CRANE HIRE SOUTH WEST SLAMMERS
Coach – Ty Harrelson

The Lakeside Lightning were really tough this weekend. They played well together and shot the ball at a high percentage from the three-point line. Jarrad Prue rebounded the eight shots they did miss.

Todd Hendley played well once again going 12-of-22 and Patrick Phillips got back some of his form with 18 points for us in the loss.
