Tigers men upset the Lightning (Week 6 Saturday night SBL wrap)

THE upset of the SBL Saturday night action saw Willetton's two imports lead their men's team to a terrific win over the defending champion Lakeside while both Rockingham teams won again to remain on top of the ladder in both competitions.

Saturday night's women's SBL matches saw the Lakeside Lightning defeating the Willetton Tigers 83-62 at Willetton Basketball Stadium, the Mandurah Magic downing the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 87-82 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and the Rockingham Flames beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 94-64 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The Lightning remained unbeaten so far in 2014 with a 21-point win over the struggling Tigers who are now just sitting on a 2-4 record coming off being last year's minor premiers before being bundled out by the eighth-seeded Slammers.

Kari Pickens led the way for Lakeside with 21 points and 14 rebounds with Krystal Stoneking adding 21 points and seven boards.

Emily Fielding added 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Lightning with Courtney Byrnes also finishing with 11 points and six boards.

Melissa Marsh top-scored for the Tigers with 13 points with Desiree Kelley adding 12 points and Lisa Wallbutton 11 to go with seven rebounds. Antonia Edmondson finished with six points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Magic also consolidated third position in the standings with an impressive 5-2 record following a hard fought five-point win over the Slammers on Saturday night.

Casey Mihovilovich was once again outstanding for Mandurah finishing with 30 points and six assists on the back of shooting 12-of-20 from the field and 2-of-4 from downtown.

Ashlee Sidebottom added 22 points and five rebounds for the Magic while shooting 9-of-11 from the floor while Hailey Dunham finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Jorjah Smith 10 points.

Amy Patton did all she could for the Slammers with 31 points and 14 rebounds shooting 14-of-22 from the floor.

Lauren Jeffers added 22 points and five assists for South West with Catherine Waycott also scoring 13 points and pulling in six rebounds.

The Flames also remained unbeaten in women's action so far in 2014 now having recorded seven straight victories following a thumping 30-point win over the Eastern Suns who are coming off a grand final appearance last year.

Jacinta Bourne led the way with 22 points and five rebounds with Darcee Garbin adding 21 points and 11 boards.

Samantha Whitcomb also contributed 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists while Kaye Tucker added in 17 points and seven boards.

Again only seven players suited up for the Eastern Suns with Jennie Rintala leading the way with 19 points and nine rebounds. Adrienne Jones and Chelsea Armstrong added 11 points apiece with Sarah-Jane Knox contributing nine points and 12 rebounds.

Meanwhile in the men's SBL competition on Saturday night, the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers beat the Silver Lake Resources 102-84 at Active West Stadium and the Mandurah Magic defeated the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 116-95 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

The Willetton Tigers then scored the upset of the night beating the Lakeside Lightning 112-104 at Willetton Basketball Stadium and the Rockingham Flames defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 102-73 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

In the battle of the two regional teams, the Buccaneers beat the Giants by 18 points to see the Buccs move up into second position in the standings with a 6-2 record while the Giants are on 2-6 after eight matches.

Big man import Odartey Blankson was the star for the Buccaneers finishing with 37 points and 16 rebounds on the back of shooting 18-of-26 from the field.

Bennie Lewis also added 21 points and nine rebounds for Geraldton while Carter Cook contributed 13 points, and Aaron Ralph 11 to go with four rebounds and two assists.

Lordan Franich led the way for the Giants with 22 points and 13 rebounds with Duran Blue adding 21 points, Tommy Hannon 17 (13 rebounds) and Matthew Leske 15.

The Tigers then put together their best performance of 2014 recording an eight-point win over the defending champion Lightning. Willetton has now improved to a 2-5 record with the win and Lakeside has slipped to 5-2.

Willetton's imports were both outstanding with John Dickson finishing with 40 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocked shots on the back of shooting 15-of-26 from the field and 4-of-7 from downtown.

Quinn McDowell also added 38 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Tigers with Mitchell Clarke contributing 15 points, seven boards and four assists.

Brad Tinsley finished with 28 points and seven rebounds for Lakeside while Jesse Dixon contributed 17 points and six boards, Steven Butler 13 points and five assists, Caleb Palkert 13 points and six rebounds, and Jarrad Prue 12 points and 20 rebounds.

The Magic then improved to a 5-2 record by recording an 11-point win over the now 2-4 Slammers.

Paul Hafford starred for Mandurah with 32 points and nine rebounds with Taylor Mullenax finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Ben Smith also finished with 14 points and seven boards, Brendan Della Maddalena 17 points, six rebounds and five assists while Rhett Della Maddalena had 12 points.

Playing-coach Ty Harrelson did all he could for the Slammers with 29 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Jonathan Todd Hendley added 19 points and seven rebounds for South West with Clive Weeden contributing 14 points and nine boards.

Rockingham, meanwhile, maintained top spot in the men's SBL with an eighth-straight victory by beating the now 2-6 Eastern Suns on Saturday night.

Cooper Land led the way with 28 points and seven rebounds for the Flames on the back of shooting 10-of-18 from the field.

Tom Remmerswaal added 15 points for Rockingham with Taylor Land finishing with a triple-double made up of 13 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists.

Andrew Bowman also played well with 13 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Flames with Travis Moore also scoring 12 points.

Ben Smith top-scored for Kalamunda with 20 points and Louis Timms added 19 points and 13 rebounds.
