Week 4 Men's SBL Wrap

TRE Nichols led the South West Slammers to a double win weekend in the Men's SBL while the Cockburn Cougars also won twice to maintain their hold on top spot after four weeks of the 2016 season.

It was a monster Friday night in the SBL with five matches including the Cockburn Cougars beating the Willetton Tigers 115-108 and the South West Slammers defeating the Mandurah Magic 109-104.

The Joondalup Wolves also beat the Perth Redbacks 116-78, the Stirling Senators won a shootout 137-119 over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and the Perry Lakes Hawks overcame the East Perth Eagles 87-74.

Then on Saturday night, the Stirling Senators defeated the Perry Lakes Hawks 100-94, the Rockingham Flames beat the Lakeside Lightning 113-85, the South West Slammers downed the Goldfields Giants 101-97 and the Cockburn Cougars beat the Geraldton Buccaneers 104-89.

Finally on Sunday, the Goldfields Giants bounced back to beat the Mandurah Magic 113-104 and the Willetton Tigers also rebounded to defeat the Geraldton Buccaneers 112-88.

Following four weeks of the 2016 season, the Cockburn Cougars sit clear on top of the standings with a 5-1 record.

The defending champion Joondalup Wolves (3-1) are third ahead of the Rockingham Flames (4-2), Stirling Senators (4-2), Goldfields Giants (4-2), Perry Lakes Hawks (3-2), South West Slammers (3-2) and Willetton Tigers (3-3).

Just outside the top eight are the Geraldton Buccaneers (3-3) followed by the Lakeside Lightning (2-3), Perth Redbacks (2-3), East Perth Eagles (1-4), Mandurah Magic (1-4) and the winless Kalamunda Eastern Suns (0-6).

The Team of the Week has been named made up of Tre Nichols (South West Slammers), Damien Scott (Willetton Tigers), Jacob Holmen (Goldfields Giants), Chudier Pal (Rockingham Flames) and Marcus Goode (Cockburn Cougars).

Nichols was named Player of the Week for his two performances in the Slammers' wins over the Magic and Giants.

On Friday at home to Mandurah, Nichols had 32 points, seven rebounds and seven assists shooting 12-of-23 from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Then on Saturday night also at Eaton Recreation Centre against Goldfields, Nichols finished with 37 points and eight rebounds on 13-of-26 shooting from the floor, and 5-of-6 at the line.

Scott was named to the Team of the Week for the first time with his weekend beginning with 28 points in Friday's loss to Cockburn on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from downtown.

Scott then had his best game with Willetton in Sunday's win over Geraldton with 45 points, eight rebounds and four assists. He shot 16-of-28 from the field, 10-of-18 from three-point land and 3-of-5 at the foul line.

Holmen was named to the Team of the Week for a second time with his weekend beginning with 32 points, 18 rebounds and three assists against the Slammers on Saturday.

Then on Sunday in the win over the Magic, Holmen had 39 points and 16 rebounds shooting 15-of-27 from the field and 9-of-9 at the stripe.

Pal continued his strong start to the season with the Flames on Saturday night in the win over the Lightning with 27 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Goode had a big say in the Cougars' win over the Tigers on Saturday as he was named to the Team of the Week for the first time. On Friday he had 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Then on Saturday in the win over the Buccaneers, Goode finished with 31 points, 18 rebounds and a mighty eight blocked shots. He shot 13-of-22 from the floor.

There were a host of other big performers starting on Friday night with Goode receiving plenty of support as the Cougars downed the Tigers.

Gavin Field contributed 28 points, six rebounds and five assists for Cockburn, Najee Lane 25 points, 10 boards, five assists and four steals, and Daniel Thomas 15 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Then on Saturday night in the win over the Buccs, Rhett Della contributed 22 points and seven rebounds, Lane 15 points, five assists and five steals, Field 12 points and Thomas 10 along with three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Jay Bowie had 29 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in Willetton's Friday loss to Cockburn with Kyle Armour adding 22 points and Josh Johnson 13 to go with seven rebounds.

As well as Scott's 45 points for the Tigers on Sunday against the Buccs, Bowie had 24 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds, Johnson 11 points and seven boards, and Armour 10 points and eight assists.

The Wolves had a big 38-point win over the Redbacks at home with Bobby Evans leading the way off the bench with 23 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two blocks.

Kevin Davis added 20 points for Joondalup, Rob Huntington 15 to go with eight rebounds and Ben Ironmonger 14 along with five boards, three assists and two steals.

Jourdan DeMuynck top-scored for the Redbacks with 20 points and 11 rebounds with Joel Wagner adding 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Ben Smith also had 17 points.

The Slammers beat the Magic on Friday and along with Nichols' efforts, Royal Crouch finished with 26 points and nine rebounds, Wade Hitchcock 15 points and eight boards, and Trent Worthington 13 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Clive Weeden returned from a knee reconstruction to play 19 minutes for five points and four rebounds.

Then on Saturday with the Slammers beating the Giants, Crouch had 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Worthington 13 points and 20 boards, and Teny Puot 11 points.

The Magic lost to the Slammers on Friday despite 26 points from Daniel Florance, 22 and 17 rebounds from Taylor Mullenax, 21 points and six boards from Jarrad Jackson, 18 points and 10 rebounds from Ben Smith and 15 points, and 11 boards from Trevor Setty.

And in the Magic's Sunday loss to Goldfields, Setty had 27 points, Mullenax 24 (nine rebounds), Smith 20 (11 boards), Jackson 11 and Florance 11 (seven rebounds).

The Senators beat the winless Eastern Suns in a high-scoring shootout by 18 points at Warwick Stadium on Friday with Cody Ellis finishing with 28 points and nine rebounds.

AJ Majstrovich added 25 points and seven rebounds for Stirling, Kyle Lindbergh 23 points, 14 boards and nine assists, and Austin Bruton 14 points.

And in the overtime win over the Hawks on Saturday, Jayden Coburn led the way for the Senators with 20 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Lindbergh contributed 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists, Bruton 17 points and six boards, Majstrovich 15 points and eight rebounds, and Ellis 11 points, four boards and two assists.

The Eastern Suns lost their sixth straight match to open the season on Friday despite scoring 119 points. Tim Squire top-scored with 30 points while Jarrad Prior added 17, Latrell Matthews 14, Geordie Murray 14 and Travis McIlroy 13.

The Hawks recorded a 13-point win on Friday without Bryton Hobbs with Brian Carlwell delivering 23 points and eight rebounds. Josh Garlepp added 16 points for Perry Lakes and Ryan Smith 14.

And on Saturday in the overtime loss to the Senators, Carlwell had 20 points, 21 rebounds and four blocks for the Hawks, Ben Dixon 17 points and six boards, Ben Purser 14 points, eight boards and four assists, and Smith 14 points and six rebounds.

Rhys Vague top-scored for the Eagles with 18 points to go with 10 rebounds while Amen Osayande added 14 points, eight boards, four steals and two blocked shots. Drew Williamson put up 18 points from the bench.

The Flames beat the Lightning on Saturday night at home with the Land brothers available for the first time together this season. Cooper finished with 30 points, 14 rebounds and four assists, and Taylor eight points and seven assists.

Ryan Godfrey also scored 16 points to go with four rebounds and four assists for Rockingham, and Matthew Honey 12 points, eight boards and four assists.

Seva Chan finished with 20 points and four assists for the Lightning with TJ Hallice adding 20 points and eight boards, and Daniel Alexander 16 points and five rebounds.

In the Giants' loss to South West, Kenny Manigault finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals with Ezra Nikora contributing 10 points, Daniel Goodluck 10 to go with six rebounds and Edin Zunic seven along with 12 boards.

The Giants beat the Magic on Sunday with Manigault adding 23 points and nine rebounds, Goodluck 15 points and six boards, Jerome Reid 13 points and Zunic 11 to go with eight rebounds.

The Buccaneers went down to the Cougars on Saturday at Wally Hagan Stadium despite Matthew Adekponya finishing with 31 points and seven rebounds, Maurice Barrow 21 points, Mat Wundenberg 10 points and boards, and Aaron Ralph 10 points and 11 rebounds.

And in Sunday's loss at Willetton, Carter Cook had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Buccs while Adekponya added 18 points and 12 boards, Ralph 15 points, Wundenberg 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Barrow 10 points, nine boards and four assists.
