Week 5 Men's SBL Wrap

THE Cockburn Cougars continued their impressive start to the 2016 Men's SBL season with a win over the South West Slammers on Saturday night while the defending champion Joondalup Wolves sent a message with a big win over the Perry Lakes Hawks.

There was just the one game on Friday night with the Lakeside Lightning defeating the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 103-94 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

Then on Saturday night, the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants won a high-scoring thriller 120-119 over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns while the S & K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers defeated the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames 101-95.

The Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves also beat the Perry Lakes Hawks 93-62, the Bethanie Stirling Senators defeated the Texture WA Perth Redbacks 107-103, the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars downed the Print Sync South West Slammers 98-83 and the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers prevailed over the Mandurah Magic 82-67.

Following five weeks of the 2016 Men's SBL season, the Cockburn Cougars are sitting clear on top of the standings with a 6-1 record ahead of the defending champion Joondalup Wolves (4-1).

The Stirling Senators (5-2) sit in third position ahead of the Goldfields Giants (5-2), Willetton Tigers (4-3), Rockingham Flames (4-3), Geraldton Buccaneers (4-3) and Perry Lakes Hawks (3-3).

Then just outside the top eight is the Lakeside Lightning (3-3) followed by the South West Slammers (3-3), Perth Redbacks (2-4), East Perth Eagles (1-5) and Mandurah Magic (1-5). The Kalamunda Eastern Suns remain without a win at 0-7.

The Team of the Week is made up of Najee Lane from the Cockburn Cougars, Jourdan DeMuynck from the Perth Redbacks, Maurice Barrow of the Geraldton Buccaneers, Cody Ellis out of the Stirling Senators and Daniel Alexander from the Lakeside Lightning.

Lane was named to the Team of the Week for the first time this season after he had 24 points, 22 rebounds, four steals and three assists in the Cougars' 15-point win over the Slammers at Eaton Recreation Centre.

Despite the Redbacks falling short by four points against the Senators, DeMuynck did all he could with 38 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals to be named to the Team of the Week for a second time this season.

Barrow was named to the Team of the Week for a second time this season after leading the Buccaneers to a six-point win over the Flames at Active West Stadium. Barrow finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds and six assists shooting 9-of-18 from the field and 7-of-7 from the line.

Cody Ellis led the Senators to a tight four-point win over the Redbacks at Warwick Stadium to be named to the Team of the Week for the first time this season. He had 29 points, nine rebounds and four assists on 12-of-18 shooting from the field.

Alexander put in another standout performance for the Lightning in the nine-point Friday night win over the Eagles with 36 points and 17 rebounds to be named to the Team of the Week for a second time this season.

There were plenty of other tremendous performers as well starting on Friday night with TJ Hallice adding 23 points and nine rebounds for the Lightning, Hayden Bell 17 points, four boards and four assists, and Corey Martin 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Seva Chan contributed six points and 12 assists as point guard.

Drew Williamson top-scored for the Eagles with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals with Rhys Vague contributing 22 points, 10 boards and five assists, and Amen Osayande 13 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.

The defending champion Wolves beat the Hawks by 31 points at Joondalup Basketball Stadium with Trian Iliadis leading the way with 23 points and five steals while hitting 5-of-10 from three-point range.

Kevin Davis added 17 points and seven rebounds for Joondalup, Sean Easther 12 points, Rob Huntington 11 (seven boards, three assists) and Bobby Evans nine to go with 10 rebounds, three blocks, three steals and two assists.

Ben Purser top-scored for the Hawks with 15 points to go with 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals with Josh Garlepp adding 10 points. Brian Carlwell pulled in 13 rebounds.

The Senators beat the Redbacks by four points and not only was Ellis a big factor, but Jayden Coburn contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds for Stirling with AJ Majstrovich adding 16 points and eight boards, and Corban Wroe 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.

As well as DeMuynck's performance for the Redbacks, Joel Wagner contributed 23 points, Lewis Thomas 13 (nine rebounds, three blocks, two steals, two assists) and Reed McConnell 13.

As well as Lane having a big performance for the Cougars against the Slammers, Marcus Goode finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots while Rhett Della scored 20 points and Daniel Thomas 18 to go with five assists.

Tre Nichols top-scored for the Slammers with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists with Royal Crouch contributing 18 points and 14 boards, Corey Easley 13 points, four blocked shots and seven rebounds. Trent Worthington added 13 points, seven boards and three assists.

The Tigers had a solid 15-point win over the Magic with Jay Bowie leading the way with 28 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Damien Scott also had 24 points for Willetton, Josh Johnson 10 (five rebounds, five assists) and Nic Cody eight (eight boards, four blocks, two assists, two steals).

Trevor Setty top-scored for the Magic with 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Taylor Mullenax added 16 points, 10 boards, four steals and three assists.

Jarrad Jackson contributed 13 points and six rebounds for Mandurah with Ben Smith adding seven points and 12 boards.

The Giants hung on for a one-point win over the fast finishing Suns at Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium with Jerome Reid leading the way with 29 points, six rebounds and three assists while nailing 5-of-10 from three-point territory.

Jacob Holmen added 25 points, 11 boards and seven assists for Goldfields with Ezra Nikora contributing 18 points, five assists and three steals, Edin Zunic 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Daniel Goodluck 16 points, eight assists, seven boards and two steals.

The Eastern Suns almost pulled off a remarkable comeback victory but just fell short to remain winless.

Jacopo Marsili top-scoring for the Suns with 26 points, six assists and four steals with Billy Grey contributing 19 points, Jarrad Prior 18 (seven rebounds, three steals), Brandon McGill 18 (five boards, four assists) and Ryan Blanchett 15 (seven boards).

As well as Barrow's performance for the Buccaneers against Rockingham, Aaron Ralph finished with 23 points and seven rebounds, Matthew Adekponya 22 points and nine boards, and Beau Samuelson 19 points.

Cooper Land top-scored for the Flames with 31 points and 11 rebounds while Ryan Godfrey added 21 points and Taylor Land 16 to go with five rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
