Week 6 Saturday night SBL wrap

THE East Perth Eagles Women have opened their account for the SBL season with a win over the South West Slammers on Saturday night while the Slammers Men along with the Lakeside Lightning and Geraldton Buccaneers were also victorious.

It was the battle of the winless Women's SBL teams on Saturday night at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre. In the end, it was the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles who defeated the Print Sync South West Slammers 72-56.

Then in the Men's SBL on Saturday night, the Slammers defeated the Eagles 102-86 while the Lakeside Lightning beat the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 110-81 at Lakeside Recreation Centre and the S & K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers downed the Bethanie Stirling Senators 96-87 at Active West Stadium.

There was just the one Women's contest on Saturday night and it just happened to be between the two teams who had both lost their opening five matches of 2016.

It was the Eagles on their home floor who started strongly, though, with 21 points to 12 in the opening quarter and they managed to open up a 22-point advantage heading into the fourth period before winning by 16.

Not a lot separated the two teams in most facets but the Eagles did manage to shoot 43 per cent against 36 per cent by the Slammers, while East Perth got to the line 17 times (making 10) and South West only the six occasions (making three).

Nicole Jorre St Jorre top-scored for the Eagles with 13 points, 10 rebounds and two assists while Jodie Milligan contributed 12 points and four boards.

Jodee Sontay also added 11 points and four rebounds for East Perth, Haylee De Sousa 12 points and Gemma Houghton nine to go with four boards.

Courtney Bayliss moved into the starting line-up for the Slammers and had another strong performance with 18 points and 11 rebounds shooting 8-of-21 from the field despite 2-of-9 from three-point range.

Dena English finished with 13 points, three assists and two rebounds for South West while Raya Thompson contributed seven points, and Brittany Gliddon six to go with seven boards.

And in the Men's action on Saturday night, the Slammers turned around the result from the Women's contest beating the Eagles by 16 points despite being behind at three quarter-time.

East Perth led narrowly 68-66 after three but then South West turned on a scintillating fourth period with 36 points to 18 to end up running out 16-point victors on the road.

Despite the Slammers winning the rebound count 56 to 37, East Perth ended up putting up 11 more shots but shot just 31-of-93 at 33 per cent while South West managed to hit 35-of-82 at 42 per cent. They also nailed 10-of-28 from three-point range.

Tre Nichols was again the star of the night for the Slammers with 32 points, six rebounds and three assists shooting 13-of-23 from the field, 2-of-6 from downtown and 4-of-7 at the foul line.

Royal Crouch added 27 points and 20 rebounds for South West with Wade Hitchcock contributing 14 points, Corey Easley nine (five rebounds, two assists, two blocks) and Trent Worthington eight (15 rebounds).

Teny Puot lined-up for the Slammers and had five points and five rebounds in almost 30 minutes of court time.

Drew Williamson top-scored for East Perth off the bench with 19 points and six rebounds with Thomas Korf contributing 17 points, four boards and two assists.

Rhys Vague added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles while Amen Osayande had 10 points and four boards, Brendan Dinardo nine points, three rebounds and two assists, and Nikola Donlagic six points and six boards.

The Buccaneers and Senators did battle also on Saturday night at Active West Stadium. In the end, the Buccs were able to hold on to their nine-point half-time advantage to win by the same margin.

Despite 20 turnovers, the Buccs were able to pull in 62 rebounds to 51 from the Senators while also doing well in the paint scoring 54 points to 40 from Stirling.

Maurice Barrow had another terrific night for Geraldton with 32 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals while shooting 12-of-23 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the line.

Matthew Adekponya continued his strong debut SBL season with 30 points, nine rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists.

Carter Cook finished with 19 points and four rebounds as well while Aaron Ralph had eight points, five boards and two blocks. Mat Wundenberg pulled in 16 rebounds.

The Senators had just the seven players suit up and each of them put in a strong showing despite the eventual defeat.

Kyle Lindbergh led the way with 21 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists while Ashley Litterick contributed 16 points and eight boards.

Corban Wroe finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Stirling, Tom Witts 11 points, five boards and two blocks, Cody Ellis 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots, Jayden Coburn 10 points and Jason Hampton six.

And finally at Lakeside Recreation Centre, the Lightning came away with an emphatic 29-point victory over the Giants on the back 28 points to 12 in the second quarter, and 35 to 21 in the third.

The Lightning's pressure forced the Giants into 26 turnovers on the night of which Lakeside scored 30 points from. The Lightning took 15 more shots for the game and shot 45 per cent from the field while Goldfields made just 30 per cent of their 78 attempts.

Daniel Alexander is the reigning SBL Player of the Week and had another tremendous performance for the Lightning with 32 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

TJ Hallice contributed 19 points, seven assists, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks for Lakeside with Corey Shervill adding 11 points, seven boards and three steals, Daniel Grida 11 points and Frank Johnson 10.

Kenny Manigault top-scored for the Giants with 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals with Jacob Holmen adding 12 points and nine boards, Edin Zunic 11 points and eight rebounds, and Daniel Goodluck eight points, five assists and four rebounds.
