Week 6 Women's SBL Wrap

THE East Perth Eagles won for the first time in 2016, the Willetton Tigers lost their first game of the season and the Perth Redbacks and Perry Lakes Hawks both returned to winning form as part of Week 6 Women's SBL action.

There were seven games spread across four days starting on Friday night with the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves defeating the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars 82-69 and the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Mandurah Magic 66-56.

Then on Saturday night, the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles won their first game of 2016 against the still undefeated Print Sync South West Slammers 72-56 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

On Sunday, the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames defeated the Mandurah Magic 65-56 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Finally on ANZAC Day, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns won an overtime classic 92-91 over the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers while the Textile WA Perth Redbacks defeated the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles 76-59 and the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars downed the Lakeside Lightning 80-72.

Following the Week 6 action, the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames have moved to the top of the Women's SBL standings with a 6-1 record just ahead of the 5-1 Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers. The Perry Lakes Hawks sit third also at 5-1.

The Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves (4-1) are fourth followed by the Textile WA Perth Redbacks (4-2), Kalamunda Eastern Suns (3-3), Bethanie Stirling Senators (3-4) and Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars (3-5).

The Lakeside Lightning (2-4) are just outside the top eight followed by the Mandurah Magic (2-4), Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles (1-6) and Print Sync South West Slammers (0-6).

The Team of the Week has been named and is made up of Alison Schwagmeyer (Lakeside Lightning), Stacey Barr (Kalamunda Eastern Suns), Deanna Smith (Perry Lakes Hawks), Candace Williams (Cockburn Cougars) and Louella Tomlinson (Willetton Tigers).

Schwagmeyer is named to the Team of the Week for the third time in six rounds to open the 2016 season after 34 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals on 12-of-21 shooting from the field and 9-of-10 from the line in the ANZAC Day loss to the Cougars.

Barr had a big finish to the game on Monday in overtime against the Tigers with a massive block and game-winning three-pointer. That saw Kalamunda hand Willetton its first loss of 2016 and Barr finished with 27 points, 10 assists and three steals. She shot just 8-of-29 from the field but 8-of-10 at the foul line.

Smith is named to the Team of the Week a fourth consecutive time after leading the Hawks to a bounce back win over the Magic after their first loss of 2016 the previous week against the Wolves.

Smith had 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. While she did also have eight turnovers and shot 5-of-14, her impact was significant on the victory.

Williams was named to the Team of the Week for the second straight round and she began on Friday night with 36 points, 20 rebounds and two assists against the Wolves on the back of shooting 15-of-25 from the field.

Then on Monday, Williams had another 26 points and 15 rebounds in the win over Lakeside.

Despite the Tigers' loss to the Suns, Tomlinson had a strong performance on ANZAC Day for Willetton with 17 points, 16 rebounds, four blocks, four steals and three assists on 6-of-10 shooting to be named to the Team of the Week for a fourth time in six rounds.

There were plenty other standout performers as well starting Friday night with the Wolves backing up their victory last week over the Hawks with a 13-point win over the Cougars.

Klara Wischer contributed another 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists for the Lady Wolfpack while Nikita-Lee Martin finished with 19 points, five boards and four assists, and Shani Amos 13 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals.

Amy Kidner added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Joondalup, and Ellyce Ironmonger four points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Williams did all she could for the Cougars, but had some support from Cherridy Thornton who had 12 points and five rebounds on Friday, and then 21 points and five boards on Sunday in the win over the Lightning.

As well as Smith's performance on Friday night for the Hawks, Antonia Edmondson finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, Lauren Jeffers 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Sarah Donovan 11 points, eight boards, three steals and two blocked shots.

The Magic lost to the Hawks on Friday with Adijat Adams top-scoring with 16 points, five steals and three rebounds while Emma Klasztorny had 14 points, 12 boards and three steals, and Annette Davis 12 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.

Then in Sunday's loss to the Flames, Adams added 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Mandurah, Klasztorny 16 points and Rachel Halleen 10 to go with 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The Eagles won their first game of the season with Nicole Jorre St Jorre top-scoring with 13 points to go with 10 rebounds and two assists. Jodie Milligan added 12 points and four boards, Haylee De Sousa 12 points and Jodee Sontay 11.

Then in Monday's loss to Perth, Elainah Coffin top-scored off the bench for East Perth with 11 points.

Courtney Bayliss top-scored for the Slammers on Saturday against the Eagles with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Dena English contributed 13 points.

The Flames beat the Magic by nine points on Sunday with Darcee Garbin contributing 19 points and 15 rebounds, Jacinta Bourne 17 points and five boards, and Sami Whitcomb 15 points and eight rebounds.

As well as Barr's performance for the Eastern Suns, Carley Mijovic showed that they could provide quite the one-two punch after 24 points and six rebounds in her first game with Kalamunda.

Meanwhile, Kate Malpass also had 22 points and 13 assists for the Tigers and Ebony Antonio 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Redbacks beat the Eagles by 17 points on ANZAC Day with Jess Jakens leading the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Gilmore added 14 points and 11 boards, Ajay Jones 13 points and five assists, and Lisa Wallbutton 12 points and 11 boards.

As well as Schwagmeyer's effort for the Lightning, Courtney Byrnes finished with 17 points.
