Week 6 Men's SBL Wrap

THE Joondalup Wolves beat the Cockburn Cougars to open the ANZAC Round of SBL action in their top-of-the-table Men's clash before the Cougars bounced back on Monday and the Willetton Tigers put in a remarkably dominant performance.

It was a monster weekend with 10 matches spread across the four days starting on Friday night with the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves defeating the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars 108-95 and the Mandurah Magic downing the Perry Lakes Hawks 85-77.

On Saturday night, the Lakeside Lightning beat the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 110-81, the S & K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers defeated the Bethanie Stirling Senators 96-87 and the Print Sync South West Slammers downed the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 102-86.

There were two matches on Sunday with the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 95-90 and the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames beating the Mandurah Magic 81-76.

Finally on ANZAC Day, the Willetton Tigers had a remarkable 81-point victory in Alan Black's last game in charge as coach, beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 147-66 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles downed the Textile WA Perth Redbacks 102-94 and the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars defeated the Lakeside Lightning 112-92.

Following six rounds of the 2016 SBL season, the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves sit atop the standings with a 5-1 record just ahead of the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars (7-2).

The Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers (5-3) sit in third position ahead of the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames (5-3), Bethanie Stirling Senators (5-3), S & K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers (5-3), Print Sync South West Slammers (4-3) and Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants (5-4).

The Perry Lakes Hawks (4-4) sit just outside the top eight followed by the Lakeside Lightning (4-4), Textile WA Perth Redbacks (2-5), Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles (2-6) and Kalamunda Eastern Suns (0-8).

The Team of Week has been named and consists of Matthew Adekponya and Maurice Barrow both from the Geraldton Buccaneers along with Jay Bowie (Willetton Tigers), Royal Crouch (South West Slammers) and Daniel Alexander (Lakeside Lightning).

Adekponya was named to the SBL Team of the Week for the first time and he had 30 points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots, three steals and three assists in Saturday night's win over the Senators.

Barrow was named to the Team of the Week for a third time and on Saturday night he had 32 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Bowie was part of Willetton's monster win over Kalamunda on ANZAC Day finishing with a triple-double made up of 21 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals.

Crouch was named to the Player of the Week for the first time after 27 points and 20 rebounds on 10-of-16 shooting in Saturday night's win by the Slammers over the Eagles.

Alexander backed up being the Player of Week for Round 5 by again being named to the Team of the Week for a third straight time. He delivered 32 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in Saturday's win over Goldfields on the back of 15-of-20 from the field.

Then on ANZAC Day, he had 29 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to the Cougars shooting 9-of-18 from the field, 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.

There were plenty of other standout performances as well starting on Friday night with the top-of-the-table clash between the Wolves and Cougars at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

The defending champion Wolfpack prevailed on the back of 19 points, six assists, four rebounds and four assists from Trian Iliadis. Reece Maxwell added 15 points and four rebounds, Kevin Davis 15 points, 11 boards and three blocks, and Seb Salinas 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Ben Ironmonger contributed 13 points as well for the Wolves, Rob Huntington 11 points and Bobby Evans eight to go with nine rebounds.

Gavin Field finished with 28 points and five rebounds for the Cougars with Marcus Goode adding 21 points and 12 boards, Najee Lane 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Rhett Della 12 points and 10 boards.

The Cougars bounced back to beat the Lightning on ANZAC Day with Field finishing with 23 points and seven assists, Goode 23 points and 17 boards, and Lane 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Daniel Thomas had 14 point and six assists in his 200th SBL match and Rhett Della six points, nine rebounds and two steals in his 300th game in the league.

The Magic defeated the Hawks by eight points on Friday night with Taylor Mullenax leading the way with 22 points and six rebounds. Trevor Setty added 17 points and seven boards, Jarrad Jackson 17 points and Ben Smith 15 to go with 13 boards and five blocked shots.

Then in Sunday's loss to Rockingham, Mullenax had 24 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, Setty 22 points and 11 boards, Jackson 14 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Smith 12 points and nine boards.

Brian Carlwell had 27 points 15 rebounds in the Hawks' loss on Friday to the Magic with Josh Garlepp adding 13 points and seven boards.

Then on Sunday, the Hawks beat the Giants by five points with Jordan Hickert putting in his best performance of 2016 with 18 points and six rebounds. Carlwell added 17 points, 12 boards and four blocks, Ben Purser 16 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three blocks, and Ryan Smith 16 points.

As well as Alexander's performance for the Lightning in Saturday's win over the Giants, TJ Hallice had 19 points, seven assists, six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots while Corey Shervill scored 11 points, Daniel Grida 11 and Frank Johnson 10.

Then on Monday, Seva Chan had 16 points for Lakeside, and Hallice 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

The Giants lost to the Lightning on Saturday despite 21 points from Kenny Manigault, 12 and nine rebounds from Jacob Holmen and 11 points and eight boards from Edin Zunic.

Then in Sunday's loss to the Hawks, Holmen had 34 points and 10 rebounds for the Giants and Manigault 20 points, 10 boards, five assists and two steals.

As well as the performances from Adekponya and Barrow in Saturday's win over the Senators, Carter Cook also had 19 points for the Buccs while Mat Wundenberg pulled in 16 rebounds.

Kyle Lindbergh contributed 21 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for Stirling while Ashley Litterick had 16 points and eight boards, Corban Wroe 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and Cody Ellis 11 points, 10 boards and seven blocked shots.

The Slammers defeated the Eagles on Saturday and along with Crouch's performance, Tre Nichols contributed 32 points and six boards, Wade Hitchcock 14 points and Trent Worthington eight along with 15 rebounds.

Drew Williamson top-scored for the Eagles with 19 points and six rebounds with Thomas Korf adding 17 points and Rhys Vague 14 along with 13 rebounds.

The Eagles then beat the Redbacks on ANZAC Day with Williamson adding 25 points and eight boards, Korf 19 points and eight rebounds, Amen Osayande 19 points and eight boards, and Vague 18 points and 14 rebounds.

The Flames beat the Magic by five points on Sunday with Chudier Pal finishing with 20 points and 14 rebounds, Cooper Land 20 points and eight boards, and Ryan Godfrey 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.

The Tigers recorded a remarkable 81-point victory over the Eastern Suns on ANZAC Day and as well as Bowie's triple-double, Damien Scott finished with 26 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Kyle Armour top-scored with 30 points and four assists while Nic Cody added 16 points, Mark Heron 14 (13 rebounds, four blocks), Daniel Casey 12 (five boards) and Lachlan Evans 12.

Tim Squire top-scored for the Eastern Suns with 18 points and eight rebounds. Jacopo Marsili added 11 points and four boards.

The Redbacks went down to the Eagles by eight points on Monday with Jourdan DeMuynck top-scoring with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Ben Smith added 19 points and Lewis Thomas 19 to go with 13 rebounds while Joel Wagner had 12 assists.
