Tribunal Summary

Goldfields Giants head coach Michael Haney and Perry Lakes Hawks import player Brian Carlwell were both placed on report by the match referees after an alleged altercation between the player and coach in Sunday’s SBL game at the Bendat Basketball Centre.

The report made note there were two verbal altercations between Haney and Carlwell, one in the final stages of the fourth quarter and a further incident at the conclusion of the game.

A tribunal was held for both Carlwell and Haney on Wednesday night at the Basketball WA offices with evidence heard from the officials Craig Copes and Morgan Hughes, Hawks players Bryton Hobbs and Ben Dixon and Giants assistant coaches Lou Causer, Jamie Crombie and Scott Manton.

The tribunal members heard statements from Carlwell and Haney and reviewed the game footage prior to deliberating.

Brian Carlwell pleaded guilty to the charge of using obscene language and received a three (3) week suspended sentence which will carry over until September 3, 2016.

Michael Haney was found guilty of engaging in conduct likely to bring the game into disrepute and received a six (6) week suspended sentence which will carry over until September 3, 2016 as well as a $500.00 financial penalty.

The suspended sentences mean both Haney and Carlwell are free to participate this weekend, however if found guilty for any charge before September 3, 2016, will serve the suspensions on top of any penalty received.

The Perry Lakes Hawks host the Eagles this Friday night and the Geraldton Buccaneers on Saturday night at the Bendat Basketball Centre.

The Goldfields Giants take on the Mandurah Magic at Neils Hansen Stadium in front of their home crowd.
