Week 7 Friday night SBL wrap

THE Perry Lakes Hawks and Willetton Tigers Men and Women each scored convincing SBL victories to open Week 7 on Friday night against the East Perth Eagles and South West Slammers respectively.

The two Women's matches on Friday night saw the Perry Lakes Hawks defeat the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles 80-44 at Bendat Basketball Centre while at Eaton Recreation Centre, the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers beat the Print Sync South West Slammers 82-54.

Then in the Men's contests, the Perry Lakes Hawks prevailed 115-85 over the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles and the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers defeated the Print Sync South West Slammers 104-74.

Starting with the Women's action, the Hawks improved to a 6-1 record on the back of a strong 36-point win at Bendat Basketball Centre over the Eagles.

Antonia Edmondson led the way for the Hawks top-scoring with 21 points to go with five assists, four rebounds and three blocked shots. She also nailed 5-of-10 from three-point territory.

Deanna Smith contributed another 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists for the Hawks with Kate Anthony adding 13 points and Lauren Jeffers 10 to go with nine rebounds and six assists.

Jodee Sontay top-scored for the Eagles with 19 points to go with nine rebounds.

Then the Tigers made the trip to Eaton Recreation Centre and came away with a 38-point victory to improve to a 6-1 record on the season to keep the Slammers winless after seven attempts in 2016.

The Tigers suffered their only loss of the season by a point in an overtime thriller against the Kalamunda Eastern Suns on Anzac Day, but they hit back emphatically on Friday night with the big win on the road over the Slammers.

The Tigers dominated the glass with 50 rebounds to 31 while forcing South West into 25 turnovers of which they scored 37 points from. Willetton also made the most of its dominance inside with 50 points in the paint and only attempting four threes, of which Desiree Kelley hit one.

Louella Tomlinson had another dominant performance for the Tigers with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots with Zoe Harper adding 17 points and 11 boards.

Kate Malpass added 10 points, four assists and two steals for Willetton, Emma Gandini nine points and five boards, and Kelley nine points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Dana English top-scored for the Slammers with 17 points while Courtney Bayliss added 14 points, five boards, two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.

Then in the Men's matches that followed, the Hawks backed up their return to the winner's list last Sunday against the Goldfields Giants by beating the Eagles by 30 points at Bendat Basketball Centre.

Perry Lakes shot a supremely impressive 47-of-88 from the floor at 53 per cent while gathering 55 rebounds to 36 from East Perth in the eventual victory.

Ryan O'Sullivan delivered his best performance of the season for the Hawks with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field and 7-of-12 from three-point territory.

Ben Dixon also had a strong performance with 20 points and four assists while Brian Carlwell contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, and Matthew Sellers 18 points, 15 boards and two blocked shots.

Thomas Korf top-scored for the Eagles with 22 points and six rebounds with Rhys Vague adding 17 points and 13 boards, and Amen Osayande 11 points. Drew Williamson added 12 points off the bench.

The Tigers then headed to Eaton Recreation Centre to play their first game with Stephen Black as coach, and they backed up Monday's 81-point thumping of the Kalamunda Eastern Suns with a 30-point victory over the Slammers.

The Tigers pulled in 61 rebounds to just 39 from the Slammers to go with 23 assists to 13 and shooting 37-of-88 from the field at 42 per cent. South West shot just 26-of-83 at 31 per cent.

Damien Scott top-scored for Willetton with 26 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds while new import Charles Funches contributed 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots off the bench in 24 minutes.

Jay Bowie also finished with 15 points and six boards for the Tigers, Josh Johnson 13 points, seven boards and four assists, and Nic Cody 12 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Slammers captain Wade Hitchcock had five rebounds and two assists in his 200th SBL appearance while Tre Nichols top-scored for South West with 23 points.

Royal Crouch finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Slammers and Teny Puot scored 10 points and Clive Weeden had eight points, six rebounds and three assists.
