Week 7 Sunday SBL wrap

THE Stirling Senators and Geraldton Buccaneers were both coming off road wins heading into their clash at Warwick Stadium on Sunday, and it was the visiting Buccs who came away with a seven-point victory.

The final game of Week 7 of the Men's SBL competition took place on Sunday at Warwick Stadium with the S & K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers defeating the Bethanie Stirling Senators 112-105.

Both teams were coming into the contest following wins on the road on Saturday night with the Senators beating the Lakeside Lightning by nine points and the Buccaneers defeating the Perry Lakes Hawks by 16.

Not only that, but both teams came into the clash with 6-3 records so it was a tantalising match-up between two in-form teams and it was a battle that didn’t disappoint.

The Senators made a strong start outscoring the Buccs 28 points to 21 in the opening quarter, but the Buccaneers responded with a monster 37-point second period to take a 58-51 lead into half-time.

The Buccs continued their form on in the third quarter with 34 more points to take a 14-point lead into the final quarter. Stirling fought hard right to the final buzzer and added 27 fourth period points but that only cut Geraldton's final winning margin to seven.

With the win, the Buccs improve to a 7-3 record on the season having won four matches in succession while the Senators slip to 6-4.

The Buccaneers had a strong shooting afternoon going 40-of-78 from the field at 51 per cent while nailing 13-of-31 at 41 per cent from three-point range and 19-of-24 at 79 per cent from the free-throw line.

The Buccs outrebounded the Senators 43 to 35 and while the Senators didn’t have a bad shooting game either with 42 per cent from the field and 38 per cent from downtown, the Buccs had just too much firepower with Matthew Adekponya, Aaron Ralph and Carter Cook starring.

Adekponya finished the day with 39 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals as he continues to show what a good signing he was to lure him over from Queensland to fill the gap left by Bennie Lewis.

Ralph contributed 28 points and eight boards off the bench for Geraldton on the back of nailing 8-of-13 from three-point territory.

Cook added 21 points and six boards despite seven turnovers with Maurice Barrow also having 13 points, four boards and three assists. Mat Wundenberg collected 10 rebounds.

Cody Ellis put in a strong performance for the Senators finishing with 29 points, seven rebounds and three assists shooting 9-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-10 from downtown.

Jayden Coburn added 18 points and five rebounds for Stirling and Kyle Lindbergh 13 points, 11 boards, five steals and four assists.

AJ Majstrovich also had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Senators and Corban Wroe 12 points and five assists Ashley Litterick and Austin Bruton both scored eight points off the bench.
